I have been using the 2080C for about a year, mainly to scan telephone
books and political nominating and initiative petitions. I'd guess
we've scanned about 75,000 pages so far. I like the 2080C so much
that I own a total of four of them.
I've previously posted a message about the need to clean the scanning
element during heavy use. It's worth checking every few thousand
pages so you don't end up with thousands of streaked images.
An additional problem has come up with several of the scanners. As
they become worn, they tend to misfeed because the front of the case
becomes bowed forward and there isn't enough pressure from the rollers
on the input stack. We've discovered that the way to cope with that
slight bowing is to use a very large rubberband (the kind you'd use in
a big slingshot) wrapped around the unit, with some sort of spacer
placed inside the rubberband at the front of the unit. A 1" x 1"
block of wood, 1/2" thick, works pretty well.
This is separate from the need to replace the feed wheels every 20,000
or so pages. Even with brand new feed wheels, once the case becomes
bowed, the paper feed becomes erratic. It's really nice that Canon
makes it so easy and cheap to replace the wheels - it's as if they
actually expect and encourage heavy use.
