Hey guys,
So I was going to build a new C2D system, but now I am going to hold off until probably Feb, no technical reason, not waiting for any new tech, I am moving to another country in Feb. so I figure why build a new desktop then haul it all over Europe. Anyway, I have a 2 and a half year old Alienware (P4 3.2 Extreme I think) with a 6800 Ultra 256mb, GDDR3 AGP in it. Does anyone think ugrading to a 7600 GS 512mb GDDR2 would be worth it? WHat about picking up a x1600 or x1650 Pro 512mb? I see these cards for like $150, which is peanuts, but couldn't find any good benchmarks for the 7600GS AGP, I heard of a 7600GT AGP but it is only 256mb that I can find and about $200. Right now I am figuring to just probably leave it, but I have been away working for a year and I saw Oblivion and really wanted to give it a go. I don't know, What do all ya'll think? Would I notice a bump in performance if I upgraded or would it all be kinda the same?
The 7600 GS, X1600 and X1650 PRO are both slower than your 6800 Ultra.
In fact, your 6800 Ultra is right on par with the 7600 GT, and 7800 GS...
The amount of onboard memory has little impact on performance. It's all about architecture and clockspeeds... your 6800 Ultra is a 16-pipeline card, the 7600 GS is a 12-pipeline card, so is the 7600 GT but is is as fast as your 6800 Ultra because of higher clockspeeds, not the amount of memory.
From a 6800 ultra, there's realy nothing in AGP worth upgrading to... except Gainwards horrendously overpriced Bliss 7800 GS+, which is actually a 24-pipe 7900 GT.
Time to change to a PCIe platform if you want a speed upgrade, mate.

Yeah those cards he listed with the 512mb memory are not fast enough to take advantage of the added bandwidth.
Its takes a fast card like a X1800XT-X1900XT or a 7900GTX to take advantage of the 512mb memory.
Yeah...it is time to upgrade, I had my mouse hovering over $2200 worth of parts in my Newegg cart, but my Girlfriend convinced me that since I will only get to play games for maybe a month before I move to my new gig in europe, I ought to wait, no point in building a nice rig then letting it hold down carpet in my office... Grrrrrr....Dang woman and their confounded logic....Of course she doesn't know yet, but the money set aside for my new rig just rose to $3000.
Ok guys, thanks a ton boyos, I know AGP is toast, I guess I will have to hold on to mine until Feb now, here is hoping there is a price drop on C2D and DX10 cards by then. Hahaha!
