XP SP2:

Would any of the good folk here know the purpose of a file called
msocust.dll?

It exists on my external usb drive only in a long, nonsense-named
folder of hex codes.

Google shows nothing to ID it, though one guy there did finally
manage to get rid of it but he never did figure out what it was
all about.

I glanced inside the file and found data indicating it won't run
from DOS; a reference to a msocust.pbd; and, a path as follows:
LOTS of hex, followed by
Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Installer\UserDataComponents\A5052E3053B8D3D45B18C0144D42897APatches10.0.6714.0

and not much else other than hex. It's an ACOM 160 Gig usb2
external drive. Search does not turn up the file in any other
drives or folders, so I'm wondering if it has something to do
with XP managing the drive? Or PNP?

I have no known viral/adware/malware etc. problems, and that path
looks like something to do with a patch install. I haven't tried
to delete it, but the guy on Google indicated he couldn't delete
it at first. I'm nore interested in what it IS than deleting it,
at this moment in time anyway.

Any help here? Could/should I delete it?

TIA,

Pop

Right click msocust.dll and select Properties. Check all the tabs.
Especially the Version tab.

Looks like Windows Installer info for Microsoft Word 2002.
