Just wondering if I can use one of those $5 DVI to VGA adapters to connect my VGA monitor to a DVI card. Also are there any ill effects from doing this?
95% of the time it works without problems. There have been reports on this forum of problems when running high (1920*1200) resolutions over VGA, if the monitor is a LCD monitor.
So, if your monitor is LCD and has got DVI in, then connect DVI to DVI, as you will get the best picture quality. If your monitor is CRT, then use the DVI to VGA adapter - no problem. If you have a LCD with only VGA in, then it is probably a very cheap monitor, with reduced resolution, so you probably will be ok - but you may run into problems.
