I have a friend with a Dell Inspiron 2500 running windows ME and while
trying to reload her programs after a virus problem she put in a restore
disk from her husband's Dell latop (honest it was a mistake) and didn't
relize it was the wrong one until it rebooted and she was at the set up
screen for a Windows XP install so she quit the install and now every time
she boots she has to select Win ME or it boots into the XP setup again. I
know you can edit the boot.ini to default to ME (I don't remember the syntax
but it's "default=C:\windows" or something like that??), but there should be
away to uninstall the installer I just dont know how. Any help would be
appreciated.

Have her boot with a Windows Me Startup floppy. At the command prompt type
the follow and press Enter

SYS C:

This will copy the Windows Me system files back to her drive. She can remove
the floppy and reboot. That should get her back hopefully. She may need to
clean up a few XP files afterward as follows:
1. Start Windows Explorer.
2. Click View menu, and then click Folder Options.
3. Click the View tab, click Show all files, and then click OK.
In the root folder of drive C (or the boot drive), delete the following
files: . Boot.ini
. Ntbootdd.sys
. Ntdetect.com
. NTLDR

. Hiberfil.sys
. Pagefile.sys
Note You might have to delete the Pagefile.sys file in Safe Mode
with Command Prompt.

I should have added to my previous message is that if she repartitioned or
reformatted prior to getting to the setup screen she will have lost her Me
setup and will need to do a reinstall.

Thanks Harry,
I see her tomorrow and do it for her then. She never actually got past the
initial setup screen so the partition is intact and she can boot into ME but
she has to select it from the menu and thats just annoying. I never ran into
this and I wasn't sure if there was a spot further along in the install
procedure that would remove or not so I thank you for your help. You'll know
if it worked by not hearing anything from me ;^)

Booting with the Me Startup floppy and running SYS C: should fix the problem
then.
