[Noob]OCing x800 XL prob

Ya, tried OCing my x800XL and ATItool actually REDUCED my core clock speed below stock speeds, what the hell? Sorry if I am noob, but ya, I used the "find max clock" and it started going up but then it went down to 387 core and I was running at 394 stock speed. Little help, anyone? This is my first try to OC anything and I dunno if I did something wrong or what, thanks!

Umm..I start getting artifacts at ~390 MHz, but its stock is 400 MHz, so I dunno...I ran three tests:
1-Stock Speed) 3Dmark06 1734, GFX 895, CPU 855
2-402.2 Speed) 3Dmark06 1715, GFX 883, CPU 860
3-407.2 Speed) 3Dmark06 1744, GFX 901, CPU 858

Any idea what I should do? I find artifacts at low speeds..So I dunno >.<

maybe its a bad card, mine doesn't OC much, its only 430/530 on stock cooling.

I read in a wikipedia article about the X800 series that the X800 XL is a terrible overclocker because of the way ATi Fabs them. It sure fits with the way mine overclocks - I can only get it up to 425/510 with a VF700 and ramsinks.

Wow, I thought mine sucked at Ocing 8)

I didn't even spend any extra on after market cooling even though the fan gives a nice whirl when fan is maxed out.

Have you seen voltmods on the X800XL, they have an artical on it over at techpowerup but i didn't bother because I was too lazy to pull out my card to see if the article was about AGP or PCI-E.

my x800xl underclocks itself too

it runs super stable and pretty cool at 531/561 (which are over x800xtpe speeds)

I usually peek at around 71C since I have atitool max out the fan at 65C.

I got the card up to 570/570 but then the shitty powersupply failed... i am waiting to get a new HSF solution from Artic Cooler w/e for Christmas... I don't doubt that I will get the card to at least 600/1200 (600/600).

I have only gotten artifacts once and it was when i was at 585Core with atitool running my fan at stock settings and i peaked at like 81C.

test your OC over and over and make sure it is stable before you jump into BF2/CSS or Oblivion!
