I am running winxp pro and am trying to copy a 7gig file from the c:
drive to an external usb2.0 hard drive. The drive works fine copying
smaller files, but I get an error "Error Copying File or Folder..
Cannot Copy There is not enough free disk space. The external drive
has over 100 gigs free space when I check properties. I swapped with
a larger external drive (200 gigs free) and got the same message. So
I know both external drives work fine, but can't copy the file. I can
copy it to another folder on the same internal drive.
Any ideas what to do? I haven't run into this one before. Not sure
of any limitations on file size transfer.

I'm having the same problem with my external HD. I'm trying to copy a file that's only 181MB and I get prompted about the same error. I've copied files that are far larger in size with no problem. I have sufficient space on my external HD.
You stand a better chance of getting an answer if you start a new thread rather than digging-up an old one from 2004, also if you give people some information about the machine you are using.
From the (little) information you have given, the problem could be:
trying to store too many files/folders on the root of a FAT32 drive,
a drive corruption,
a faulty/cheap external drive...
