There is an upgrade available for my new Axim X50V. Is there any risks
involved in the upgrade. I'm worried upgrading the ROM is similiar to
upgrading the BIOS on a PC. If you don't do it right - your PC will
not boot.

Thank you for your time and help;
Frank

Yep, very dangerous, it happened to me on a ipaq 2210.
Upgraded via BT as the USB port did not work.
After erasing the bios a bootloader was installed which only looked for the
USB port (which still did not function -:(
So braindead and a 300E repair by HP.

Yes. If anything goes wrong during the update process, epically with
the hardware, you can end up with a paperweight. It's rare, but it
happens.

Don't fix what ain't broke. I borked a motherboard with a BIOS update
(which, BTW, reported 'successful') that I was just sure I had to have.

Yep, let me guess..... you would do the same :-)
But i had no choice: BT bugs, WiFi DHCP failures, i needed the USB port for
normal daily active synch.
I hoped it would be a complete binary, it was only a loader.
It was a all or nothing... so nothing.

I have upgraded my Dell Axim X30h with the latest A05 a few weeks ago.

I had absolutely no problems. It is not quite the same as flashing
BIOS in a motherboard. I think there was a warning in there someplace
to NOT do it wireless, and DON'T do it on batteries.

A couple of apps had to be reinstalled of course, but no issues. I
can't think that the X50 would not be as easy.

They do say "if it ain't broke don't fix it", but I found wireless
connections quicker, and ActiveSyncing more reliable after the ROM
upgrade (just in case Dell is addressing similar issues in your X50).

Oh, so you think that SPAM and peanut butter would taste great on a

I did it - used the USB cradle (don't do it wirelessly
or without mains power) and made a ROM backup first. It
went without a hitch and the new ROM seems to quite a
bit better wih regard to WiFi reception and also the
touchscreen seems to be a lot more responsive. Others
have confirmed these, and other minor points that I've
not personally noticed.

Certainly didn't break anything, anyway.

Well, if you aren't having any problems with the Axim already, then why
update it? Really the only reason you would want to update is to fix bugs.
If you haven't found any bugs for what you are working with, don't do it!
"Don't fix it if it ain't broke!"

The ROM update is like updating BIOS on a PC. If something should go wrong,
you will have a dead Pocket PC that basically will do best as a paperweight
at that point in time. If you need to do the update as to problems that are
fixed in the update that you need to have, then follow all instructions
EXACTLY. DO NOT do it wirelessly as that will cause more and more problems,
and DO NOT do it off batteries. If the power should go out during the time
that it is doing the update, then the update can't finish and again you just
turned that cool "toy" into a paperweight.

If you need to do the update, everything should go smoothly if you follow
all instructions!
