Why hasn't the e6300 core 2 duo been tested and put on the Tom's Hardware CPU charts yet?! It would be nice to see how it compares with the different flavors of AM2 X2's.

Edited: Specifically, I am thinking of building a system from scratch after the first of the year (waiting for price drops and tax return) and would like to see if it would be best to go with a E6300 or an AM2 version of 4200+. I have a feeling that the core 2 duo would be faster for about the same price.

If you haven't gone AM2 already, then both systems you will need to buy new mobo, ddr2, and of course the processor. So the cost will be around the same. Maybe a little cheaper for the AM2. However, the e6300 can overclock to 2.8 without breaking a sweat, and most have got it to go furthur. If you plan on overclocking, the e6300 overclocked to 2.8 will beat anything AMD currently has on the market. It does this even with stock cooling. Get yourself some decent ddr2 800, i have corsair xms and its awesome, the e6300, or even the 6400 for 40 bucks more, a decent mobo, and you're ready to roll. also, i recommend my mobo. its only 145 at newegg.

no. single core is pretty much dead. thats why you can get a fx-55, which about a year ago was going for around 800, is now going for 100.

Actually more like $139 with special offer.

I asked the assholes about it and they said "they didn't have one to test". Lame.

No need for expletives, but I'm sure they can get one soon. They are the cheapest core 2 duo.

Is there any point in going single core anymore?

Only if you are on a real tight budget. There may not be many multi-threaded programs out right now, but they are coming. For longevity's sake going duo-core is best. If you plan to replace wth CPU in a year or at most two, then a very fast single CPU may be better right now.

I disagree completely. Multithreaded applications are only half the story. Multitasking is very important to many people. Dual core allows multitasking to be handled much more fluidly and without pauses, hangs... It also allows for relatively intense programs to be running at the same time. Such as games, and antivirus. Or antivirus and a bunch of other programs. whatever it may be. You mention upgrading a year or 2 down the road. 2 years is a life time for computers. don't plan your current computer on what might happen a year from now, much less 2 years from now. even if he is on a budget, dual core can be had for under 100 bucks now. if his budget is that constrained, that would just suck.

Where can you find an FX-55 for $100? That is an awesome deal. For gamers on a budget, that is very good value.

I see the FX-55 on newegg for $200 and a free 250GB hard drive. That is an awesome deal, great for those building a new system.

Single core may be dead for the enthusiast but in regards to your average person/business/government I am sure it will be around for several more years.

Not sure why Tom's left out the 6300 in their test but I have noticed in the past they seem to like to do that..............I think they just like to tease us.
