really if ur getting both for the same price its more sensible to go for the pci-e option....much more futureproof.....

Reply to Robb_Jenkinns

Yeah dude pci-x and try to stick a 7900gs its not so more expensive than 7600gt.
pc express 8)

Reply to vulefu

go the amd way. everyone knows(or should know) that athlon 64's were far better than pentium 4's.

another way to go is to get a dual-core cpu.

Reply to desolationw

just go for the AMD 64 /Gefore7600GT system... andyes AMD 64 is better than P4s

Reply to melarcky

Yeah i doubt anyone is going to say dont get the AMD and the pci e card stick with your celery and agp ;)

o yeah um get the AMD and pci e card :o stay as far away from the p-4 as you can. Not because they suck or i should say not only because but you can get quite the sun burn sitting to close to one of those things!

thanks thats what i thought but never hurts to have other points of view. thanks :D

Dude, anything (almost!) is better than your celery thing, but try and stretch for a 7900gt or the (can't believe I'm typing this) Ati equivalent.

ok everyone just said some crap without thinking

(nearly) everyone gave him an answer to his question: P4 3Ghz + AGP g-card or A64 3400+ + PCI-e.

Answer being A64 3400+ + PCI-e.

eVGA 7900GS - $190 from Newegg
eVGA 7600GT - $119 from Newegg

60% Price Difference. No, not much of a price difference at all. :)

Anyway, the X1900GT is better than the 7900GS for around the same amount. It depends on which card you get and who has a MIR. The Sapphire X1900GT is actually cheaper than most 7900GS cards.

Stay away from the 7900GS. Get the Athlon system & 7600GT PCI-Express.

Btw, do you have a budget?

If OBLIVION s your main game, stay away from the geforces!

You want a nice X1900GT or X1950 PRO (when available)

Geforces are notoriously slow in Oblivion, check the benches...

about 230.00 for a budget. newegg all the way. im going with the 7600 gt and the amd. next year ill get a whole new computer. dx10 quad cores, that means prices should be coming down on stuff thats out now.when i build the new system i dont know who im going with. ati or nvidia. mind you ive always used nvidia . thanks for all the replies. :D

The 7600 GT is a great card, but it's a bad idea if your focus is Oblivion.

I test cards for Toms, Oblivion doesn't like Geforces. Even a relatively slow X1600 XT can take on the 7600 GT in Oblivion.

An X850 XT would be better.

Better yet, the X1950 PRO can challenge the 7900 GTX in Oblivion.

Does that mean "beats" or "almost beats"? Also, do you know of any comparative benchmark for the X1950Pro yet?

Reply to Dr_asik

Can't find the GTX bench (I thought) I saw, but here is a bench showing the X1950 PRO putting some serious hurt on a 7900 GTO... which is a 7900 GTX core with slower 7900 GT memory:

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardwar [...] page12.asp

Even at GTX memory speeds, I doubt it would come anywhere near catching the X1950 PRO in oblivion foliage benches...

Curiosly, why not go AM2 instead of 939, its almost the same price?

PCI-x and PCI Express are not the same thing.

My kids run a

p4 3.2ghz (540j), 2gb ram, Asus P5GD1 & a

AMD 3500 venice, 2gb ram, MSI K8N Neo4.

The AMD is a lot faster at everything.

I'm stuck with a socket A athlon 1800 with 512mb ram which is slowest of all. Thats the price of being a dad, be warned.

Reply to oldgreyhead

Well it Depends on what you plan on using your PC for. And what is your budget? If you can tell me this believe people will be able to help you much better.

im just learning what ati is what. hey im going to consider my options. plus im building or my tech is building a new computer next year around summerish. i just need a hold me off. i only have a celeron because of an ignorant so called tech. i said put a equal or greater cpu. i had a pent 4 2.8, so i get a celeron 2.6. oh yeah my ti 4600 became a 5200. my wife gave me a 6600le and here i am.

Reply to corpclegg

Yeah i used to work with alot of people who didnt care about what they were selling you. Just that they were selling you. I got into a argument with one of the sales people that was telling this dude it was a ultimate gaming rig with total crap for parts and ended up quiting 10 minutes later because he wanted me to lie and say it was good. It pretty much ended up with me telling him i didnt care if he had no integrity i wasnt going to forfit mine because he wanted to lie to a customer.
