I have AMD 4000+ on stock 2.4Ghz speed ( on zalman9500, mobo- ECS KN1 SLI extreme, mushkin 2-3-2-6 stock , BFG GeForce 7800 gtx lil OC'ed by bfg and HD-regular small raptor) and im wondering if OC'ing the processor would help me with getting more FPS in my curent game or should i OC it to play some future games ?
And if for example 2.8 Ghz or more is going to do better in gaming how should i proceed with OC'ing ?
And another 'if'... if i buy fx-57 which is already running at 2.8Ghz ( there was some huge price drop since last year and now is under 400$ on new egg) should i sin and push it further to like 3.0Ghz or further ?
Im a total noob so feel free to explain it very well if you please
Your processor is good for most of todays games OCing will help just a bit. Don't expect too much improvement in gaming. For video related tasks there should be a bigger difference. But still go ahead and OC. It's nice to get the max performance from your setup.
Oc'ing helps just a little bit on your case.
The FX57 is not worth it.
Better go with X2 4800+ and overclock that. This will be another story. You can reach 2.6 easily with the X2 4800+ you will have a real gaming/multitasking CPU.
i can help a little since we have just about the same systems...good choice btw
how much overclocking will help depends on the particular game. i overclocked to 2.8 ghz after noticing E.T. had been maxed out with no penalty in fps - typical of a cpu bottleneck. many older games like E.T are cpu - intensive and respond well to overclocking. newer games like quake 4 or something will benefit less since they are more gpu intensive. anyway, got a nice fps boost - around 36 fps during the four timedemos tested. 3dmark 06 was less impressive - 5040 went to 5281 but that surely doesnt tell the story as far as im concerned. the goal was a constant 125 fps in E.T and it was enough to do that.
here is a very popular thread on overclocking the amd 64
note: before overclocking, disable "spread spectrum" in the bios.
set the pci-e bus to 101. otherwise it might be overclocked along with the fsb.
disable cool & quiet.
also, you have a good cpu heatsink but make sure you have adequate cooling on the chipset (especially if its nvidia).
here's my settings for comparison (not a heavy overclock). and if you overclock tell how it went 8O
fsb -233
htt multiplier - 4x
cpu multiplier - 12x
cpu frequency 2796 mhz
vcore - 1.55 v (yours may differ)
fsb/ram - 5:4 2-3-3-6 (yours may differ)
btw i wouldnt go with the fx57 either since the higher the processor, the less it can be overclocked in general.
lol ET. Do you know me from ET ? lol hahaha, check out SNL stopwatch server, im a SNL member and im there everyday.
125 fps stable in my case. I actually play only ET so i dont need any boost but ET:QW is comin and maybe some other games too so i just wanna be ready. As I understand new games are capped at 60 fps and are more GPU dependable so i will have to wait for geforce 8 series i think.
I just did drivers update for all importand devices with bios too and i scored 63 points less in 3Dmark06, lol. Btw, my score is 4022 ( 4085 before update ). coooool
I guess you got 1k more becouse of your newest buy of the GPU Since im not very good with OC'ing i would actually buy fx-57. But im not sure if i need it. Its not a very big difference and i have no delays in normal usage of my computer. All i care is new games since ET works without any fps drop.
One more thing about temperatures. CPU and GPU at 44 C now when im typing here. Im afraid to check when gaming I have nice airflow so im kinda dissapointed at least at CPU which should be like 10 C less.
Thanks for fast replies btw
ET stands for Enemy Territory, its online only version of Return To Castle Wolfenstein ( RTCW ) which has also its online version which is very similar to ET. Its like 3 years old and with my rig its easy to keep 125 fps stable on different maps. 125 is a max u need to use unless you wont to make some xtremely high jump with fps 333.
I think im going to wait till new AMD comes out, that quadro or something. Then i will have to follow the hype and change all my computer components again Peace
E.T. rocks imo. try it, its free i probably have not see you piagio since i dont ping well to the snl server. anyway....if you say you get 125 fps in E.T. thats all that matters. but going by the cpu/vga charts here, you should be getting a much higher 3dmark06 score. if something is wrong (i idle @ 36 overclocked and we have the same heatsink). you might run these timedemos to compare:
i get higher fps and also higher temp. hah, forget it, im not going to OC, im afraid to mess it up. the best would be to have someone here to do it for me becouse i have 2 left hands and cant do sheeet
naah i just said like that. I did timedemo just once and it was et_beach. I got 234 fps i think. I just said i get higher fps becouse at the time of playing my fps is not dropping from 125. I remember when i had old rig before and i was scoring 20-40 fps and it was an awesome rig like years ago. I upgraded a year ago and now it doesnt drop from 125.
Im too lazy to do anything All i know is how to upgrade so im going to do that in few months probably since all games runs great for now.
Thanks for your help
peace
I will expect less and less need for OCing in the future. With the next generation of soundcards that where sparked from the Soundblaster X-Fi series and what seems to be a poor original attempt at Physics Acceleration... We may see that these devices unload the processing from the main CPU.
I read reports that showed Core2Duo's showed no increase in FPS in Fear, over Athlons last greatest. Fear was programmed to take advantage of the current chipsets available. It seemed that the developers assumed that the slow increase of actual speeds we have seen in the past few years would continue.
