Hey guys and gals.

So I made my girl friend format her computer because it was acting up real bad, and since I was going through the pain of this, I decided to do something about the noise level.

This thing makes a 747 think it has E.D.

Now sorry if I am not more specific but I am an AMD fanboy and I don't know much about Intel systems, which is why I'm asking for help.

System:
3.4 gig Prescott core 775 Land grid sockety thing.
Stock cooler
Intel D915PBL motherboard
1x 1 gig stick of DDR2 800 Corsair ram (single channel)
X600 AIW
500watt Antec power supply
Antec Lanboy case

What I have done so far to cut down on the noise/heat is to disconnect the x600 cooler and install two 80mm fans in place. My girlfriend already did a good job on cable routing, and all the intake and exhaust fans work fine now.

I went into the bios but there really wasn’t any place to lower the fsb and cpu voltage anywhere. I installed some Intel overclocking program like ABITs Guru thing, and set the Ram to 533 from 800 and lowered the FSB to 779 and locked the cpu fan speed to 2200RPM which is almost as quiet as my A64 system.

But I don't know how to lower the FSB any lower and I dont know how to lower the vCore so the temps dont run so high (with the fan speed locked, it runs up to 190-200 F under full load!)

Any ideas?

PS Im not looking to buy anything new for her system (like a better Mobo,) as she is upgrading to a Conroe system in the near future I hope…

You have an Intel motherboard. I don't think you can do anything about the system clocks.

Well, to be honest I thought that the noise came from the Video card fan, since I had always thought of Intel systems as "quiet"
I never thought they would sell a cpu with a fan this loud, but hey...

The two 80mm fans run at about the same noise levels as the single 20(?)mm fan on the video card since they turn at a slower RPM (lower pitch vs the high pitch of the stock fan, think nVidia Dustbuster series.)

Coming from AMD cpu's the thought of leaving a cpu idle over 150F is just nuts, but I have heard these things don't mind running hot.

So is there no way to lower the FSB on these cpu's/mobo's (since I assume intel still locks their processors.)

I can mod/replace the cpu fan all day long, but I really want to slow this thing down and lower the voltage so it doesn't have to run so hot while being quiet.

Intel does not lock the FSB but the multiplier. When you buy a better processor in then same series your just basically paying for the multiplier. But Since it's an Intel motherboard like I said before the motherboard will lock the FSB so there is really nothing you can do to clock it at different speeds.

Thanks.

You can adjust the FSB, but not by much.

http://www.intel.com/design/mother [...] /index.htm

After running this program I was able to lock the CPU fan speed and set the FSB 2% lower to 779

But it just ignores anything I set that is lower than -2%

I even tried editing the config file but still it does nothing lower than -2%

I wonder if I'm not editing this file correctly but I don't have much experience with this program so I don't know.

I wasn't aware Intel let you change clocks on anything but the high end mobos such as the Bad axe. Keep trying and messing with the settings you may get it lower.

Edit: I reread your first post and you said it can reach 200 F! I would buy a new cooler.
