Well I bought a barebones kit a few months ago and want to upgrade. I have a MSI PM8M-V Via Socket 478 MicroATX Motherboard and am thinking about going with something like a 3.4 ghz prescott. I am upgrading from a Intel Celeron D 340 2.93Ghz and 1 gig of ram. From what I understand Celerons are bad for gaming. I want to get some more speed out of this system without building a new pc. Can anyone give me some good advice for a chip to buy.

Heh.. seems like there are a few P4 users left like me.

PM8M-V CPU Support Status

Ewis - P4/800FSB CPUs

I'd go with the northwood core, since the run cooler.

If you feel like OCing, perhaps the P4 3.0/800 will do fine.

Or if not.. P4 3.4/800 should do fine as well.

Prices:

3.0E-8001M Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800MHz 478pin 1MB CPU, OEM $74.67
P3.4_800 Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz 800MHz 478pin 512KB CPU, OEM $110.73
3.4E_8001M Intel Pentium 4 3.4GHz 800MHz 478pin 1MB CPU, OEM $129.78
2.8E_8001M Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz 800MHz 478pin 1MB Prescott CPU, OEM $68.50
P3.0_800 Intel Pentium 4 3.0GHz 800MHz 478pin 512KB CPU, OEM $80.34
P4_2.8_800 Intel Pentium 4 2.8GHz 800MHz 478pin 512KB CPU, OEM $69.53

Indeed. Celeron's can by bad for gaming, amongst other things.
However, there was one thing you lacked to mention in your post, was what kind of games were you intending to play, also what are the rest of your system spec's (I mean there is no point in splurging on something extreme fast and expensive if the rest of the system is a pos), and last but not least, what kind of budget constraints are we looking at?

I am running a gig of ram 320 gig ide hard drive and a radeon 9800 pro card. I just purchased Battlefield 2142 and it runs ok at the low settings. I was hoping to bump it up to at least medium and change the resolution if I could. So i figured i'd get a p4 3.4 ghz and another stick of ram. My budget would be 300$ or less.

8O ... I'm really sorry for you man; how could you buy this stuff only few months ago?! It was plenty of LGA775 and AMD 939s stuff at that time, how could you get a 478 system with upgrading in mind?!
My advice; sell your current system and put the money togeather for a cheap AM2 or 775 system. You will get ripped for a 3.4G P4 while you can take an AM2 3800+ or PentiumD 805 for less than $100, A64 X2 3600+ for ~$130 etc.

Faster cpu isnt gunna change your quality settings your video card is defanilty holding that back and more ram is always a bonus especialy with gaming.

Wow... just dawned on me that M25 noticed he said "few months ago"?

Owell.. guess you live and learn as time goes by.

Hopefully you didn't spend too much on that barebones kit.

Ya, save up and get yourself a better rig to build.

Yeah it was about 200$ for a case, mobo, cpu, and ram. I got it around 3 and a half months ago. Since I had all the other parts from Old pcs/give aways I figured I could salvage a decent pc from it. My current pc isin't "bad" it just doesn't game worth a damn. I should be happy I even got my parts since I purchased them from tigerdirect. I have now come to terms that I need a whole new system. Good thing I am rich
