Right now I have a p4, (2.4ghz no ht), and battlefield 2 has been quite choppy for me. My specs: p4 2.4ghz no ht, 7800gs agp, 1gig pc2700 (2x512mb), 500w psu all that good stuff. What could be making it jumpy? Is it maybe my memory speed? any suggestions would be helpful, thanks.

that could be the problem, i usually play on highs/mediums pretty well but there it has always been choppy and is just starting to make me mad. So you think i should get another gig of ram?

in almost a month and a half im getting a 3700+ (939), a x1900xt, and a new ati motherboard (939). I will still use the same memory that i have in this system now, do u think i should just get more memory at the same time or will those specs that i am upgrading to make it good.

BF is one of the few games that makes use of over 1GB RAM, so yes....shoot for 2GB either way. GL :)

alright ill bump it up to 2 gigs, on last question, do you think i should get the x1900xt or the x1900gt to save some money? Because whenever dx10 cards start coming out for vista, which im going to upgrade to, i would like to pick up one of them. So which route do you think would be the best for upgrading?

The 1900GT will get you through til DX10. Going VISTA is another good reason to upgrade to 2GB RAM. GL :)

agin that is intirely up to you.

the g80 is suppose to be out next month and the r600 sometime
around the first of the year.
i probably wont buy either one. ill wait for the g81 or whatever
or maybe the r620.

but the x1900gt/xt should hold you over till next spring easily.

when the (both) dx10 cards are out hell even vista
there isnt going to be 10 or 20 dx10 capable games that come out.

imo by this time next year there might be say 10 dx10 games out.

seems like a probable prediction.

cause its all about the games for me....

ill probably just spend the 15 bucks more and get the x1900xt, then like you said, around this time i will upgrade my system to a dx10 card. Thats if there are games that i like coming out only for dx10.

What do you mean when you say choppy? Are you playing online or at a LAN or just solo. I can run BF2 at 1280x1024 with medium settings with a athlon XP 2000+ 1gig memory and a unlocked 8 pipe 6200 overclocked to 450 core and 700 memory.

Pick up some more memory and maybe a faster processor. Your upgrade will certainly help but your current system is not that bad.

Take a look at this........

caamsa im running it at 1280x1024 as well, im playing online. My pc is wireless so it shouldn't make it that bad, and what i mean by choppy is my ping stays fine but whenever im moving im jumping, and look around it sometimes jumps back to where i was looking then back to where i want to look. So its choppy back and forth really. My wireless is 54mbs also.

Have you tried downloading FRAPS and checking your FPS while you are playing? I imagine if you are playing on a busy sever you will get some slow down. My main system is a Athlon 64 3200+ with 2gigs of memory and a X800GTO. I have my settings on high at 1280 by 1024. I have a cable modem and I rarely experience any slow downs.

The other system I mentioned is my LAN machine so I don't have to unhook my main machine and take a chance of messing it up.

Your system specs are pretty good and I just wonder why you are having so much trouble.

I can't understand why i am having jumpy problems also, anyone else have any ideas? My system should run it all also, im at work now and im going to do that entire tweak guide when i get home. Could it be my wireless speed possibly? and yes i have fraps, if i record a demo of how choppy it is, would you be able to see it and maybe try to figure out the situation?

I would say test your whole system including your internet connection. Also try playing the single player game and set it up with max bots and see how it runs. If it does not lag it could be your connection.............maybe. If you play a single player game and it lags then maybe it is your system. Play around with it. Do you have the latest drivers for your video card? Defraged the hard drive lately?

I'm defragging it right now at home while im at work, whenever it analyzed almost the entire thing was red with fragmented files so that could be a problem. I also will play around with that singleplayer idea, its probably my connection. And yes i do have the latest nvidia drivers. Could a fragmented hd really do that much damage? I ahve a 54mbs right now should i up it to 108 mimo possibly? if that is the problem.

I don't think the hard drive would create that much of a problem but every little bit helps. Also turn off any programs running in the back ground. I was at a LAN last night and a guy had problems because his antivirus came on and started scanning the hard drive. In regards to your connection I am not sure what to tell you. I have a hard wired system and have never used a wireless system before.

What you are trying to describe sounds a lot like "rubberbanding" lag which may be caused by your wireless network, your ISP or the "server" hosting the game.

Try doing some single player benchmarking (with the FPS counter toggled) and bypass the wireless part of your network by connecting your computer directly to your cable/DSL modem for your next online gaming session, also, try playing on different servers.

You might also want to look at apps, background tasks and malware that could be eating up ressources, software issues are free to fix and can make a huge difference in performance.

At this point, I don't think that purchasing new hardware would help with the issues you are having.

I strongly suggest avoiding any DDR platform upgrade now unless youre sitting on at least 2GB of it. Get an AM2 setup, PCI express card and 2GB of DDR2. Ebay that AGP card NOW or you'll become a slave to it.

dumb question:
whats malware?

Malware is a catch-all term used to designate the wide (and ever-growing) array of malicious code such as virus, trojan, spyware, adware and rootkits that can run on a computer without the user's consent.

Some posters seems way too eager to pressure newcomers into buying new hardware despite their problem having nothing to do with hardware.

Sure, a X1900XT along with a mid-ranged C2D, a high performance mobo and 2GB of DDR2 is a very solid gaming system and would look nice in a sig but the first thing you should do at this point is to eliminate any networking and software issue before you go spending your money on hardware.

While your CPU is on the verge of obsolescence (not quite there yet but very close to), a 7800GS (375/600, 38.4GB/s, 8ROP, 16PS & 6VS), even though it is an AGP card, is somewhere between the 7600GT (560/700, 22.4GB/s, 8ROP, 12PS & 5VS) and the 7900GS (450/660, 42.2GB/s, 12ROP, 20PS, 7VS), as such, it may not be amongst the top performers but it is very capable of providing an enjoyable gaming experience (even more so if you give it a bit of an overclock), it is worth taking measures to migrate it to a new system if you do decide that you need to upgrade.

In your situation, an hybrid AGP/PCIe motherboard (such as the Asrock 775Dual-VSTA) would allow you to use your 7800GS with a contemporary CPU (E6300 or E6400) yet give you the option to upgrade to a PCIe video card without having to change motherboards, same goes for transitionning from 2x512MB DDR to 2x1GB DDR2.
