My current modem is a Toshiba pcx2200 and I max out at 1087 Kbps (DSL reports). I checked with my cable company (Cox) and they said my modem was outdated and I should be getting 4000 Kbps. With that in mind I'm in the market for a new modem. These are the ones I'm considering.
D-Link DCM 202 Motorola sb5120 Linksys BEFCMU10 I don't know if it makes a difference but I use a Linksys WRT54G router wired to my computer. I'm open to any comments or suggestions. Thanks
i havent had any problems with the motorola surfboard. it takes up little space, great speed and connection, and i looks a lot better than the linksys modem. the only problem i ever had with it is that it tips over if i bump it. (i use it with the WRT54GL)
Thanks for the info. I was leaning towards the Motorola. Glad to know it works with the Linksys router. Who's your ISP and what kind of speeds are you getting from dslreports.com
i had adelphia until like a couple of weeks ago, now i have comcast (thanks to the whole merger deal) and this is what im getting...
(i dont know what to put in i keep getting different speeds)
you have any suggestions for testing speed. i cant get the same result twice. sometimes i get insane numbers, they are really high or really low. i dont know what the problem is, i think its comcast. i know my connection varies all the time
Try using DSL Reports. I get the same results every time (give or take a few Kbps). I do the test from usually 2 or 3 of the locations and get the same results from all of them. Tip: after you go dsl's site and click on a location, a Start button will come up and you will need to click on it twice (not double-click) to run the test.
I just ordered the Motorola! Can't wait til it comes in for the speed increase. Big difference between my 1 Mbps and the 4 Mbps Cox said I will get with a new modem.

I use to work for a big cable company on the network side of things and I must say the Motorola is the best modem, the D-link and the Linksys gave us tech's huge problems. I would go with the Motorola modem hands down , also when you get it if you choose it call your internet provider and give them the new MAC address off the modem to get it installed, then once it is installed go to 192.168.100.1 in your browser and it will give you your signal readings.
My new Motorola sb5120 modem came in today. Called the cable company and fired it up. Worked as expected. Hooked up Linksys WRT54G router and had some problems. Made a couple of config changes to router setup and back running again. Now downloading at ~7Mbps and up at ~560 Kbps. A lot better than the 1Mbps down and 118Kbps up. I'm a happy camper now!
Thanks for all the replies.
My previuos Toshiba pcx 2200 worked great until the cable company updated their system then my Toshiba was limited to 1Mbps max download. Of course it maxed out at 1Mbps before the cable co changed. Been with the motorola 2 days now without problems. Still getting great speeds.
