Concur. You can't guarantee a solid connection by trying to crimp it using a screwdriver or other mechanism other than a crimping tool. You'll probably end up with static in the line or something.
The small TP (twisted pair) wires fit in the RJ-11 plug into the middle 2 "slots" if you will. (see the metal lines in the plug) you would then push down on the 2 middle pieces of metal (one at a time) with a screwdriver to push the metal onto the wire thus creating an electrical connection.
Definitely get a crimper. You can't guarantee a secure connection otherwise. Plus, with just using a screwdriver you are only securing the actual connection as opposed to crimping the sleeve as well. (this prevents the cable and plug from being pulled away from each other, comming loose, and/or causing/creating a bad connection.
Just get the crimper.
