I just got my new PSU for my new, and first, pc build. I was wondering how do I see if that new PSU is working? I dont have any other components execpt HD, CD, and case with 3 fans. (I have to buy in pieces.) I have 2 other older computers, Compaq and Dell, if i were to hook the PSU to those components, will it work without changing any settings?

I would not connect it to a compaq / dell since they may have a propritary ATX connector and you can blow you brand new ps

You could jump-start it by connecting the CD drive (to have a minimal "pull-up" load current on your +5v & +12v for the psu to start) and simulate the mobo "power on" signal by shorting out the green "ps-on" wire to ground with a paper clip or other conductor:

Then just plug it in, turn on the back power switch (if it's there) and it should power up the cd drive. If you have a multimeter handy you can check all the voltage outputs.
