it is asking whether I want to setup an activesync connection, bluetooth
network, personal network or headset. there must be another setting I am
missing as O2 sell these devices with tomtom 3 bluetooth.

I have managed to get it working. I found a document by following links
from GPS World website and then had to change the com port used by the GPS
in settings.
Thanks to all who responded. I was starting to worry that I was going to
get completely lost this weekend in Scotland with manual map searches and
figuring where I was on it as to where I was suppose to be.

I use a tomtom bluetooth gps dvice with my XDA2s no problem.
