Stupid question - what's FTA satelllite signal? Analog or digital? Does that mean an analog card wont capture digital signal? And vice versa?

Secondly, What are some top tv tuner cards?

FTA satellite signal = Free-To-Air Satellite signal. It means, you can watch the channel/programs for free.

Analog won't capture digital signal. But some of digital tuner/decoder can capture analog. Usually analog signal are works in different bands than digital.

hehe sorry I wasnt clear, I know FTA is free to air - i actualy meant is that a digital or analog signal.

You mention you purchases a decoder... was that a tv tuner card or a separate unit, like a reciever?

FTA exist in two ways : Analog or Digital. Try to check lyngsat.com. You'll see some FTA are in analog and some in digital.

Yes, i bought a receiver which is a separate and independant unit.

Hmmm... ok. I'm actually building a media centre to work alongside my grandfather's FTA setup, so I'll be running the signal from the reciever to the Media Centre, then to the TV.

Are there any tv tuner cards that are also recievers or no?

I know someone who's selling that tuner card, which is the same WinTv-PVR-150 (i think), would that one function as a FTA reciever? It doesnt appear to mention it doing so in the description.

If not, anyone have any recommendations for FTA digital tuner cards?

hi.
all dvb-s card are fta cards.
but if you want to watch encryptet channels then you need a more specific card that can be connectet to ci interface.
most brands have some cards that can be connectet to ci interface.
some cards from hauppauge
Hauppauge WinTV Nova-CI-S
Hauppauge WinTV Nova-SE
Hauppauge WinTV Nexus-S
check these cards they are all accepting ci interface.
