I'd guesstimate maybe 20% better on average. At some resolutions and image quality settings maybe as high as 40% better.

At the top of that card it has what looks like a place for an SLI type bridge... I wonder what thats for?

I know these are suppose to be dongless crossfire models... but whats that for?

Also, are these better then the x1900xt 256 cards?
October 25, 2006 7:58:13 PM

update your bestbys then...

Also at this price, what's the point of a $140 level, just spend the extra $25 and get near double performance!!!

No, but they're pretty close, probably within 10% at modest image quality settings.

The best buys list is getting updated for November very soon. :)

Its for the Crossfire connector strip.
Its a flexible bridge that takes the place of the external dongle.

In the picture above its the copper colored strip just below the CD. Picture from the ATI version.
It bothers me that you can't find the connector in the ASUS collection of accessories that's on NewEgg.
ATI, HIS and Sapphire accessory photos all show the connector, but not Asus.

This is intentional. ASUS is doing a marketing gimmic where one of their cards comes with 2 connectors and one comes with none, and they're labeling them as a Crossfire card and the other just plain. They'll probably mark up the "Crossfire" version up a bit. Newegg only offers the plain version. So, if you want Crossfire, it's not as great a deal as you'll have to buy their other card or grab another connector on Ebay or something.

That gives some serious competition to the 7600GT, which stayed untouched in its price segment for well over a month now. I would definitly invest the additional 30$ for it.

If the x1950pro can be had for 165, I have very high hopes for the x1650xt... What do we think, settle around $125 mark???
October 25, 2006 9:44:20 PM

Please note that the ASUS card doesn't support VIVO! The X1950 PRO is supposed to have an integrated RAGE theater chip to support this (please correct me if I'm wrong), and my guess is that the ASUS cut some corners to help drop the price of the card...
October 25, 2006 9:44:28 PM

Damn. Maybe I should buy them all and sell them on Ebay. 8)

Updated. Video Card Price/Performance Analysis.

The ASUS X1950Pro has a Price/Perf of 3.10.

Now, if ATI gets the driver fixed for the X1950Pro in Xfire for Quake4, this might be the 1st card to actually recommend for a dual slot solution over a single card solution.

You can see it's missing from the picture

Showing out of stock for me now, too.

I wonder how many they sold?
October 25, 2006 9:58:11 PM

Unless I'm reading something wrong, that's not what ASUS' website says, here.

Looks like a typo at Newegg.

Finally gone for me also (not that it matters for me in the UK)

Yes the VIVO is missing, I guess you get what you pay for.... Most people will not miss it.

Whats different to the newegg site then?

Avivo and VIVO are different....
October 25, 2006 10:06:24 PM

It could be a Newegg typo. People would be especially suspicious after the C2D Xeon 3040 fiasco :?

However in the package contents, there doesn't seem to be a VIVO cable, just an HDTV cable. Maybe on the ASUS site they were referring to AVIVO technology? There is a logo saying "Video In." So confused....what is AVIVO exactly?
October 25, 2006 10:07:54 PM

I stand corrected. Didn't dig deep enough. It's in the specs.

Tricky Dicks.

There's conflicting information on the ASUS site. On the logo, it says Video In, but down below in the specs, it's missing.

Look in contrast to the X1950XTX. It clearly says "Video In" near the bottom of the specs in additional to the logo. Add the cable thing and I don't think it supports VIVO.
October 25, 2006 10:12:18 PM

Yeap. There is conflicting info on ASUS' website. I only looked at the icons. When clicking on specifications, it doesn't say anything about Video In.

The other thing is that the more expensive card has neither, and I really doubt they'd give the cheaper card more features.

Hmm...interesting. This is the exact same thing that happened to Intel's website. In two different places on the website, Intel stated that the Xeon 3040 and 3050 models had 4MB L2 cache, when they actually only had 2MB L2 cache.

However, it's not as critical here with VIVO as it was with the processors ;)

Good catch :D
October 26, 2006 12:46:23 AM

what exactly is vivo? and whats it used for?

VIVO (Video in, Video out) - Basically it means it had an ATI (umm AMD :p ) RAGE THEATER chip on the card.

http://ati.amd.com/products/ragetheater/features.html

Features

High Quality Integrated Video Encoder / Decoder with Digital Audio Support
ATI RAGE THEATER is a low cost, single chip, multi-standard video encoder/decoder that elevates video on the PC to the next level of integration, performance and affordability. Its advanced processing features are designed to generate a superior video out image, making it particularly suited for applications such as TV Web browsing. With its wide range of video inputs, multiple clock outputs, GPIO pins, I²S and S/PDIF audio, RAGE THEATER offers manufacturers the cost-cutting opportunity to substantially reduce the number of components in home-theatre and set-top-box appliances.

High Quality TV-out
RAGE THEATER video encoder converts images of Windows, Mac OS, DVD movies or games into all NTSC and PAL formats for TV viewing. The encoder uses programmable timing to generate high quality TV signals from graphics display modes ranging from 320x200 to 800x600. This provides full support of legacy VGA modes as well as the newer, low-resolution game modes required by Microsoft DirectX.

High Quality Video-in
RAGE THEATER's adaptive comb filter and advanced on-chip circuitry ensures that Composite and S-Video analog inputs in NTSC, PAL, and SECAM format are converted into high quality, low noise digital video for a sharper image. In addition, RAGE THEATER provides a full range of VBI services that includes Teletext, Closed Captioning, and Intercast.

This is different to Avivo..... (http://ati.amd.com/technology/avivo/index.html) that the Asus card does support, Avivo is basically the bit that supports high def video decode, and this is useful.

As of this post, they're back in stock. Not sure what will happen in an hour, though. The product goes in and out of stock like fashion does.

Haha. It lasted for a good 20 mins this time. Yesterday, they were up for about 3 hours before selling out. It's really short-term. They'd make more money selling it for 180-190. People would still buy it. They're hurting their own sales on the Sapphire by doing this since people will wait for the ASUS.
