My mobo has 4 SATA connectors, and I am using raid 0 2x 120GB Drives (boot)

Here is the question:

is it possible, without additional controller cards, to set up a raid 5 with a different set of drives (IIRC Raid 5 requires minimum 3 drives, and I plan to do that with drives of some larger capacity) and migrate the stuff from the original set of RAID0 to the new set of RAID5? How about RAID 0+1?

Thank you for your time.

Depends on what you MB supports. Most likely, you will have to copy the data from your RAID 0 to somewhere else, then set up the RAID 5, then copy the data onto the RAID 5. Without a controller w/hardware XORing builtin, RAID 5 will take a fair amount of CPU time and/or be slow.

What motherboard? Does it support RAID5? It's rare for onboard to support RAID5. As previous POST says, you would have to lose the present RAID setup.

Tyan S2885 is the Motherboard

well, At least I heard it supports s/w raid 5 (or h/w, the board mfg doesn't mention) with BIOS version 1.02
