Four mid-size cases arrive in time for the holiday season. Which one should you buy?

I like the Antec nine hundred just for all the cooling it offers. The Adamas is nice, but I heart its damn expensive while the Antec is only a bit above 100 right now.

Don't like the Fatal1ty, cooling doesn't meet up to my requirements and there is way too much branding. The silverstone is also nice, but out of my price range also.

What I like most about the Antec is its ability to change things around like the TT armor, where you can move drive cages wherever and stick 5.25" to your whim.

I recently purchased and returned and Antec Nine Hundred.

The unit looks great, very cool (in all sense's of the word) and industrial, however i was disappointed by the overall quality. The side panels are very thin, so much so that when removing the windowed panel for the first time the the metal tab on the back of the case bent!

The optical drives have to be hard mounted to the case, with no dampening at all. I dont like thhe fact that there is no rail system. The hard drive are also mounted metal on metal to the cages...again just a cheap impression compared to my older Sonata.

The psu mounts on the bottom of the chassis, but there are few places to hide wires and such. I was saddened to see the apparent lack of QC from Antec, but upon reading other boards this seems to be an issue not only with this case but PSU's too.

I am surprised they never or rarely review the cases from Supermicro. Ok, they aren't exactly gaming cases, but they are exceptional cases. I've had a SC760-A for a few years (it's been upgraded a few dozen times) and it's still superb. workmanship is incomparable.

From the 4 reviewed, I'd buy (and probably will) the Zalman Fatal1ty.

Reply to Simonetti

yeah, Antec's quality isin't as top top notch as it used to. I'll keep your advice in mind and double check some other review sites, but I'm still pretty much set on the case. Rails isin't a big thing for me because how often do you change optical and disk drives. Although not having any rubber grommets to reduce vibration and noise might be a negative... shrug

Guess we'll see.

I love the look of the NZXT Adamas but,

The cooling solution on this case seems to be a little louder than the others.

I'm going for very quiet. Can't wait to try out my p180 tonight

Reply to Mrgreen371

I'm a big fan of the Silverstone TJ09, but that damned Fatal1ty case is nice looking... if it didn't have all the branding it would be better. I mean hell, I own a Fatal1ty mouse... just because I got used to it and oddly enough have the same "claw-grip" game style as the punk. But you don't need to splatter your name on all sides of the case.

Reply to Natecannon

Any idea who OEM's that case for Zalman...that would be sweet without the branding

I like the Adamas too but it is very cramped inside

Reply to hwk2

Is it just me, or the quality of the reviews are deteriorating?
This article just tells you about the features if each case, without testing the performance with a live rig, or even depicting the installation process.
You can almost write it by just visiting the manufacturer's website.

Don't get me wrong, I'm huge fan of the site and a loyal reader for many years, but I think this review is not the in same standard as most articles.

Reply to BnZ

Eh, I don't really consider that a review as much as just giving us some knowledge of the case and some personal opinions... I don't come to Tom's for reviews, I go to [H]ardOCP for reviews since they link all the major review sites and those reviews are usually all top-notch. Tom's always good on the big news and general picture of the programming world. Also I like Tom's community.

The Adamas is nice... but overpriced for a tank... If I ever need to go into combat and need to bring my computer, than the Adamas it is... otherwise why do I need such a monster?

Meh, Zalman is overpriced for what it does, Antec over Zalman anyday.

Reply to Doughbuy

I agree totally, gonna check for some more reviews too, might be the case for my build

Reply to Hicks121

Silverstone TJ09

Simple....yet ever so sophistocated at the same time. Now that's what I'm talking about.

Hi

I just wanted to know. Some power supplies have a fan on top. While all cases don't have a hole on top matching the fan. Seems strange.
I want to buy a new case and PSU. So I am wonder what the fan on top of the PSU is for.
Thanks!!

Reply to enewmen

I had recently bought a case from SunBeamtech called the Transformer (http://www.sunbeamtech.com/index-2.html). This case has two 80mm fans on the side, 1 80mm fan on the top, and a 120mm on the back. There is a spot for a 120mm on the front. I had read a few articles about adding a front fan, and how it can potentionally just re-circulate air. I was wondering if anyone has a case with side fans AND a front fan, and if so, hows the CPU temp. Right now I have a 2.2 amd that I overclock to 2.4 and it runs @ 106F.

Reply to Boogahdah

Just turn the front fan backwards so it blows in while the rear fans blow out. Am I missing something?
I also want the front fan to help cool the HDDs.
By the way, the sunbeam cases do look REALLY COOL. I want to get a clear LED case, turn my room to a disco. (I'm 38, I can afford to do these things now).

Reply to enewmen

I would choose the Silverstone case, but it is just too expensive (and yes a little too big). So my choice would then be the Antec, however I would still choose the p180 over the 900.

Reply to gm0n3y

The transformer is a damn heavy case, but it's decent.. I looked quite a bit into it a while ago. Yeah, front fan should be intake to cool your hdd bays which is pretty standard fare for most cases these days. But if your like me with so many hdd's your front fan is only cooling hdd's and doing squat for your cpu.

Reply to Doughbuy

I was thinking about buying the Antec 900. Just wondering: why would you choose P180 over 900?

Reply to dean7

Thanks for getting back.
Ya, I need a side fan as well to get fresh air on the CPU. As well as a front fan to get air on the HHDs.
I don't care if the case is heavy, I don't move it much.
I still don't know what the top PSU fan is for. Cases don't have a top hole where the PSU is located.

Reply to enewmen

To tell you the truth, its mostly just for looks. I don't really like the look of the 900 that much and the p180 is beautiful. I wish it had the cooling of the 900.

Fan on top of PSU is for cases (like Antec 900) that mount PSU in the bottom of the case instead of the top. The Antect 900 also has that 200mm fan at the top to pull the hot air from the PSU out after PSU blows the air upwards. Look at pics from this article. Make sense?

Reply to dean7

Can't you just turn a regular PSU upside down to get the fan facing up?

Yeah, the cooling of the 900 is what attracts me to it. Only thing I don't like about it is that it comes with LED fans, which I find a bit annoying... am I the only one? I just don't see the point of them. If I wanted my case to look like some sort of "death ray", I'd mod it myself.

Reply to dean7

honestly non of those

the zalman i'd consider if if wasn't for all the stupid logo's on the outside of the case.

the next case i get will be the coolermaster PAC-T01-EK Black ... yes i know it is a very old design now and yes i know it only has 80mm fans

I just don't care it is the best looking computer case ever made.

i just helped my friend build a pc w/ one of the coolermaster cases and it was just awesome.

Reply to atarione

Eh, cases are all about design, but the real good cases are the ones with a nice design that all fits functionality. I think the 900 has a decent design and great functionality (especially with the removal of external 3.5" bays, those should have been gone a long time ago.

I agree with you on the stupid LED fans, but if you get a case with a window, its to be expected. You could replace them with better fans anyways. The 120mm fan that came stock on my antec isn't bad (and it has speed adjustments), but my AeroCool Turbine is way better. It pushes a lot more air and sounds about the same. On the downside it was close to $20 (CDN).

You know, thinking about it, depending on how the fans are made, you might be able to detatch the LEDs. I've never tried it, but it shouldn't be too hard.

Reply to gm0n3y

I take it these are all new cases reviewed . . . . . I've seen more than a few mid-towers that interested me a lot more than these, including the Aerocool ExtremEngine 3T and the Coolermaster Ammo. Can't say any of those featured had me jumping up and down.

Reply to Psimon

I completely agree, but its hard not to laugh at a company trying to sell hand made drum looking computer cases for $700....

My vote still rests on the Silverstone TJ09

Reply to 3lfk1ng

... if they were going to sell cases that cost 700, then make an A/C cooled case. The only one I say looked pretty ghetto... if a company actually made a decent one, a lot of enthusiasts would definitly look into it.

Only problem with that is no one knows how to service an A/C unit...

Reply to Doughbuy

True. I was planning on buying the 900 and just replacing the 120mm fans with non-LED variety. But, maybe just disabling it would work (or maybe it would hose the fans, but who cares if I was planning on replacing them anyway???).

Reply to dean7

Thanks for the note.
It makes sence. I didn't know cases with the PSU on the bottom is so popular.

Reply to enewmen

I thought it nice that if I had the money, that I have some choices now. Power supplies on the bottom, nice . but for now my noxt case will be , um that , case I saved from around the block or that street corner one

Reply to g13man

they all sucked and were ugly...

I'd rather see a review of cases under $100 with more variety and FLAIR!

(first post, and its a rant  )

I totally agree. This review was almost useless. I could have found all this out just by looking at the manufacturer's pages.

They failed to mention anything about the Antec 900's screw mounted 5.25" drives, or the fact that the Silverstone's was the only one with a removable motherboard tray. :?

I used to read THG for reviews on hardware. Reading articles like this is discouraging. (reason for account).

If they were going to do a skimpy review, they should have included more into the collection. I have my eye on the CoolerMaster Mystique.

http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/Products.aspx?pid=1248

And is it just me or are psu's at the bottom stupid? Doesn't that make hiding that giant 20/24 pin cable harder?

Even the entire tray that holds the motherboard and attached expansion cards conveniently slides out.

They may not have mentioned that it was the only one with a removable MB tray, but they did mention that it had one.

But yeah, the review was a little skimpy.

Reply to gm0n3y

Pat,

I gotta say I'm disappointed with this article. I mean, anyone can throw up pictures of 4 cases, talk about them, and then publish the specs on the web. Why weren't any benchmarks done in cooling? That's what we really care about. Looks are only half the equation.

Every other case review i've seen on other enthusiast sites always do temp. benchmarks. Always.

i kinda like the antec because of the elevated mobo.

that means i could run my bottom sli card with the aftermarketcooler
that i have for it. but have not installed it because it hits the bottom
of the case

I actually kind of like the LED fans except that they make extra light in my bedroom at night. The fans have to use those 4 pin 12 volt power supply connectors though and each fan has a low, medium and high speed setting switch (That has to be set from inside the case).

Bottom Slots on full ATX motherboard are close to the power supply in the Antec 900 case...

Well, each to their own. Sometimes those fans look alright, but usually they bug me.

Anyway, you own an Antec Nine Hundred? How is it?

I say sooourns to teh fact that the gigabyte aurora isn't in this review it is an mazing case

just my 2 cents

They've already reviewed the Aurora and, yes, its one amazing case indeed.

I like it but the clearance on the first slot where pci express video card is questionable. I might have to make some cuts with tin snips to get a connector to fit but I will not know until I reach a final decision on what video card I want and try to install it. I found out about it because another person could not plug their monitor cable into their video card.

I would probably make some cuts and bend the metal back if it comes down to it...

I wish I had the kind of clearance on that first slot like I have on my Gateway computer.

Supermicro ups: Solid, means business, great if you're going to swap drives a lot (front loading hot swappable).

Supermicro downs: front USB port but why no sound ports? And none offer a removable motherboard tray.

Reply to bberson

How about the bottom mounted PSU? Any problems with that. Only thing that concerns me about the Antec nine-hundred which is shaping up to be my next case.

5.25" drive rails are marginally useful since I've rarely seen people move around optical drives. Also, they interfere with some of the fan controllers and whatnot, which might even make that a negative. 3.25" are a plus, but not really a deal-breaker for me.

Reply to Doughbuy

definitely nice cases. They will all do the trick. I'm just a coolermaster man myself. I'm very happy with my stacker.

Reply to Chef_Boyardee

I almost got the Antec 900 this weekend. I like mostly everything about it but the bottom mounted PSU. My biggest "want" in a case is 6+ 3.5" drive slots ALL actively cooled.

Reply to JMASON50

Did anyone else find this article unhelpful in deciding what case to purchase?

4 cases were shown with no more information that what could have been gathered from their own websites. What are the author's thoughts on what this article would show to the public?

The article is titled, "Gaming Case Showdown," but in no way is 'gaming' brought into the equation of which case to buy. I at least expected to see each case tested on its cooling ability while gaming/under load and possibly a noise decibel test. Isn't that a main reason we search for a case - for a good cooling solution? There was no mention at all at how well or not so well, these cases cooled.

Reply to jrwalte

Yeah, we all came to a consensus as reviews go, this wasn't on par quality-wise. Just take it as a quick informative fact sheet that gives you a brief glimpse at each case.
