Monitor: Viewsonic G90f+ 19" CRT max resolution: 1920x1440
Video Card: X1900GT

I wish to keep my display at a resolution of 1600x1200 but every time I restart my machine the res changes back to 1280x1024, is there any way to keep hold of these settings?

Did you adjust the resolution from your graphics card? and did you hit apply or save?

Yeah, I always hit 'apply' after changing any setting,

I have alternated between setting the res to 1600x1200 at the XP display properties, applying then restarting the PC but it defaults back to 1280x1024. Then I've tried setting the res through ATI CCC but yet again the res will default back again after restarting.

Please note I do manage to get my res to 1600x1200 after I've changed the settting the problem is it doesn't stay at that res when I restart.

just bumping this, I know it's a boring question but it really annoys me that I cannot keep my res @ 1600x1200.

That is pretty odd. Are you sure its reverting or just reporting the wrong resolution? Kind of a stupid question since it would be fairly obvious if it wasnt actually changing anything when you select 16x12, and you probably wouldnt have posted if that happened, but I cant think of anything else to say at the moment so why not?.

I'm using the same monitor and haven't had that problem. Try reinstalling your graphics driver. If that doesn't do it then...well I don't know what else to do.

Two possibilities come to mind:

1. The refresh rate for 1600x1200 is set too high. If that is the case, even though the monitor can be "forced" to that setting successfully, it will revert back to a lower resolution where it can provide that refresh rate. Try setting the refresh rate to 60hz temporarely and see if the problem still happens.

2. There is a cmos in your monitor. If the CMOS is not saving the settings properly that could cause it to revert to some other resolution. Connect it to a different computer/video card combination to test this. If it happens on another computer then you actually have a defective CRT.

HTH.

monitors don't usually have cmoses but mabay its that the refresh rate is to high light suggested earlier. also check the osd see after changing the res if the monitor detects 1600x1200 and is not down scaling

im thinking its the refresh rate, its set higher on the 16x12 and it can't handle it

set your resolution to 16x12 and refresh rate at like 60Hz, then restart and see if the resolution stays the same

you can also remove your driver completely and reinstall the latest ati drivers

use driver cleaner to completely wipe your old drivers out:

Just FYI,

Most, if not all, CRTs have non volatile memory (very often implemented by a complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor - CMOS) where the settings chosen using the OSD are stored.

true but i dont uasually count it as a cmos i count it as a memory for settings :) but mabey he should use the osd to look and see with the res the moniter thinks its at.

Thanks for the replies,

I'll try re-installing the graphic drivers & see how I go.

FWIW I've just recently built a new PC & this monitor used to run perfectly on a 1600x1200 res on my old PC which was a Abit mobo with Radeon 9600 AGP.

I've recently swapped the monitor over so there doesn't seem to be any problem with the CRT.

Would it be possible if there would be any 3rd Party software causing any problems (ie, I'm using the MSI Platinum PowerUp Edt mobo & there's a bundle of software that comes with that, also logitech set point, this prolly isnt likely but I'll give anything a shot!!)

Cheers

Did you check the refresh rate? If the driver update doesn't work...

That's a pretty hefty graphics card. What are the specs of your PSU and are you sure the power connector on the graphics card is snug?

I was assuming the PSU was ok, maybe that's something I over-looked,

The PSU is a thermaltake purepower 430W (is it big enough?), yep all power is secured, I didn't think this would be an issue as the graphic card is running well.

I'll check the refresh rate as well (from memeory I believe it was set at 60 by default)

Wow alot of odd answers but usefull.

This sounds like a monitor driver issue, and usualy is. Do you have the disks that came with the monitor? If not 1.) make sure the monitors correct model number is displayed in the display properties. If not, update if so, move to #2.

2.) Update monitor drivers.

I know this isnt needed these days but I have seen it happen more then few times with Sony large CRTs.

Also, check your startup folder and your registry under HKLM\software\microsoft\windows\currentversion\run to see if any apps are setting the resolution on startup.

In regards to qwertycopter's post

Would I have any issues between my PSU & video card.

Here's my setup:

PSU: Thermaltake purepower 430W
MOBO: MSI Platinum PowerUp Edition
CPU: Core2 E6600
RAM: 2GB 667MHz DDR2
VIDEO: HIS ATI Radeon X1900GT
HDD: Western digital 160 GB SATAII
Optical Drives: sony dvd-rom & sony DRU-820A burner

Should I be looking to upgrade my PSU?

Reply to MineXX

Even if you did have a PSU problem I doubt that would cause a problem with resolutions, since the settings would be saved onto your HD. More likely it would cause a blank screen or random crashes/reboots. The PSU should be fine, but if you have any of the above symptoms, then an upgrade is needed.

My thought was that perhaps the card was under-powered, which might cause problems when pushing high resolutions.

Thermaltake doesn't seem to have a 430W PurePower on their website?

Reply to qwertycopter

Did you try what I suggested? I have come accross this quite a few times and they are ususaly MONITOR driver issues. Last time I will suggest this...

Good luck

Yep, I tried installing the monitor drivers but to no avail.

However I removed the video drivers & then re-installed & this has resolved teh problem, now evey time I restart/shutdown my system will hold the 1600x1200 res that I was after.

Thanks for your help
