When I first joined this forum, it was populated by uber nerdy super geeks, now it has gone to the NOOBS who don't know their can from a SATA connector. I mean no offense by that, if I went to linux or coding, I'd be a super noob too; Where are all the ppl that actually know things about hardware anymore, are you just too bored to reply, or gone off somewhere else ?

More about : noobs

September 17, 2007 9:43:49 PM

They left. Gone, never to return. I wish I knew where....I was internet deprived this summer, and when I got back, they were gone!

COME BACK JACK!!!!

Yeah, Jack, 3lfk1ng, mpilchfamily and DaSickNinja. I learned more about computers from those four than just about anyone else here. The Great Grape Ape being an exception to that. I think the biggest problem now-a days is that no one is really good at everything about hardware. Most people (including me) know a smattering of things, but not the entire picture.

Yeh ... ill agree with you lostandwandering... seems that the whole IT industry is spread to thin, just about everybody in the know only know a little about alot. Instead of having some type of specialty , bring it back down to University degrees... everyone is Minoring in subjects and not doing any Majors
September 18, 2007 12:02:34 AM

Well, I found all of them on ***.com
I certainly hope that the Tom's isn't so closed that they censor or ban people for providing information in a cordial manner to the forum community - even if makes people to begin posting on a competing forum. They should be glad there is competion for the best forum - and in the end it was Tom's admins decision to ban the knowledgeable posters.
So I can't really see why there should be any hard feelings from Tom's toward anybody.
September 18, 2007 12:08:35 AM

ADDITION:
They really do block the name of the site. That is just plain ridiculous!
The site is called x_c_p_u_s.c_o_m (underscores added).
Hopefully this foolishness will go away and peacefull coexistance will come instead.
September 18, 2007 1:03:29 AM

wow, thg censors X(PU5.com

that's truly pathetic
September 18, 2007 3:27:45 AM

They blocked it in fear of losing many people, which they already have. The reason they left, to many "help me with this and that", no enthusiast talk, tiring flame wars and censorship.

Well their brilliant plan just failed, I made an account.

not that I'm going to stop coming here, but this new place looks pretty awesome

September 18, 2007 4:19:02 AM

If he gets banned for doing that I will personally leave Tom's, never to return. EVER.
September 18, 2007 4:20:26 AM

wow that is freaking ridiculous
there is no logical reason to censor a website name
what's going on TOM. scared of a little competition.
grow a pair and stop censoring websites you find to have competition with yours

now that you said that you might get banned

If they ban people for joining another site to keep visitors in rather than simply improving their own site, then I would not want to continue to be a part of this site anyway.

They would lose yet another experienced poster (yeah, post count sucks but I've been here a pretty long time) and contribute to the overall downfall of thg.
September 18, 2007 4:24:56 AM

yeah they lose me too if they ban you (turboflame)
September 18, 2007 4:25:58 AM

THX Everett....I got an account now too!

September 18, 2007 4:47:23 AM

I haven't been on these forums for long but I've met some very knowledgeable people (or is it that I'm a noob?). Either way I'm sure there are many smart people in here. And also it's not one person that gives all the advice, it's all of us. We all know something different form each other and when we put all that info together, this so call forum is really smart. :D
September 18, 2007 4:50:16 AM

It's ok

he's in a better place now :(
September 18, 2007 4:55:35 AM

For certain, a lot of people who left were quiet clever, but also some had a habit of trying to dominate in the Forums. Change is good and allows new people with new ideas to get a go.
If anyone remembers the old movie "The Last Starfighter" the best saying in the film was. "Things change, they always do!"
Lets not Mourn who has left, we all know where they are. :pt1cable:  and can visit any time we want. :)
:hello:  :hello:

September 18, 2007 4:55:39 AM

i think this thread has taken a turn for the worse
it started out as why are there so many noobs and became a conspiracy against tomshardware forums

poor everett
September 18, 2007 6:00:44 AM

no doubt TOM's has lost a lot of credibility --- If they ban anyone for showing a better site---- we will all just leave
September 18, 2007 6:29:04 AM

Wait, so why were Jack, Elfking, mpilchfamily, DaSickNinja, etc. banned? I checked the other forum... and there's a thread about how we're talking about how we want them back.... But yeah. I'm just curious. Why were they banned exactly?

Big Brother....
September 18, 2007 6:46:32 AM

I think I am going to move, too. Just found out that mpilch and ninja are very active over there. And this censoring things disturbs me a lot...
September 18, 2007 7:20:34 AM

JJ left because BM started throwing around some more of his usual personal aspersions. JJ apparently complained to the mods, and was told... Well, he has never really said what he was told, but it pissed him off enough to leave. Not banned, just left. Shortly thereafter suddenly appeared the dreaded x_c_p_u_s website, JJ found it... That's when the mass exodus started. Verndewd did get banned for complaining about one of the mods, I think.

Many of the 'leavers' wanted their IP back, apparently there was a bit of a legal stoush to get that accomplished. In the long run I think that all of them ended up banned.

Jake's been a bit nicer of late, which is good... BM I think also got some warnings, but Turpit won't say.

A very short history of why there is now so little talent left on THG. I didn't want to (nor will I) write a book.

Croc.
September 18, 2007 8:24:52 AM

Someone (either the leavers or Tom's mods/admin) ought to write a small FAQ on the big forum divide, so the speculation and rumours can end.
September 18, 2007 8:38:00 AM

Personally i'm also feeling the need to leave because of noobs.

There are way to many threads like:

"what do you think about my new build?" - i don't care about your new build, you should be able to evaluate if for your self by going to the THG CPU and graphics charts.

"big friken problem!" - so you tried to plug a PCIEX card into a PCIE slot with a hammer and now it wont work, you did not RTFM and that's not my problem.

"what PSU should i get" - how about reading the sticky at the top of the PSU forums, it gives you a full guide, read it! (this applies to most hardware, not just PSU's)

If you have a problem, or want to learn something RTFM, then Google it, and if you still draw a blank then post on the forums.

This is supposed to be a place to share relevant new information and techonogy news and help with technical problems that are not simple to solve with a quick Google search.

AND FOR THE LAST TIME, I DO NOT CARE ABOUT YOU'RE NEW BUILD, PLEASE STOP CLUTTERING UP THE FORUMS WITH NEW BUILD THREADS!!!!

That's 'quite' not 'quiet'.

And I never saw any of those that left trying to 'dominate' in the forums, they merely posted refutations to certain mis-information that was being posted at the time. If by dominate, you mean posting better information, then most of them did dominate. That's why their leaving was such a great loss.

I wonder where somejoe7777 went?

As our Thai friends would say, 'sawadee, cup'. I'm sure its spelled wrong....

September 18, 2007 9:33:37 AM

nope i think you got that one right.

"Pom dee chai teedai pob khu"

hehe, see how easy life is with Google, now if only Tom's posters figured that out.
September 18, 2007 9:34:35 AM

I just signed up, too.

Down the bottom left is a drop down menu, pick the other format and you pretty much get inverted colours, so its more "normal" (white background and stuff).

*sigh* This topic is actually becoming like all the others around here, repetitive. Second time in two weeks something like this I've seen.

Oh and croc, nice summary ;)
September 18, 2007 11:03:46 AM

Well, guess what? Now that I know they're blocking a website, I just made an account there.

Quite frankly, if they are gonna filter a website address I'd like a good justification like 'they provide kiddie porn, goatse, viruses, trojans, and everything else you can thing of that is bad'. Otherwise, it's called 'competition' and I'd say that they are attempting to use their powers to form a more or less monopoly. If they can't handle the competition that's too bad. Not to mention that I'm betting quite a few left because they hate the damn website! I'm definitely going to look into this new site now because i'm curious as to why it's blocked. And god forbid if I realize it's just because the site is better than this one. I guess if I disappear you know where I went to!

I'd also like to add if I did leave this site, it's for 2 reasons:

1. I'm quite sick and tired of posts that hash out the same exact problem OVER and OVER.
2. I'm also tired of seeing posts from people who are posting their first post, and clearly show that they don't know what the search button is. Look at some of my 'flame' posts at people that can't use the search button. I don't want to see a forum of spam posts asking the same question over and over because they didn't search for their answer. I know at least 2 cases where I didn't even answer because I took their EXACT keywords in the order they typed them, hit the search button and the first post listed here had their answer!
3. The website just flat out sucks now.
4. What is the purpose of the filter? Who cares about ***.com
September 18, 2007 11:18:37 AM

I'll see you there then ;)
Back to suggesting PSUs here for me.
September 18, 2007 11:25:13 AM

Everytime someone asks for help in evaluating a complete build, instead of asking a semi-meaningful question regarding a specific topic, someone should just reply with www.dell.com.

Another type of post that I love is the, "Is this part good? I don't want to OC!"... www.dell.com. What makes these threads even more awesome are the people recommending stuff like DDR2-800... If you don't need to OC, why do you need DDR2-800? GTFO... noobs replying to noobs.
September 18, 2007 11:26:33 AM

Well in the US DDR2-800 is so cheap you might as well get it. But in australia it costs way more.

EDIT: Btw, is there a random username generation thing now? Because nearly all the new peeps around here have usernames that are just a bunch of letters and numbers.
September 18, 2007 11:31:51 AM

@randomizer..thx for the FYI about the colors; I may jump over there too as I can't take anymore ppl who are to lazy to look up ANYTHING at all. One really bad site has a smiley face with a propeller beanie on it, and it is stupd crap like, my video on my "xy" brand laptop wont work and I don't know who to call or where to look it up bs, even though it is branded all over the laptop and the docs that came with it.

This site is starting on it's way to that level, I think all these posters should send ME 5 bucks, so I can post a "my new build" thread.
September 18, 2007 11:34:10 AM

it's not just the forum colors, but the massive blinky graphics...like forum billboards...lol
September 18, 2007 11:35:13 AM

What on x_c_p_u_s?

EDIT: Guys, feel free to post in the Welcome and Rules forum with a big hello, pretty much everyone who is a regular poster has :D
September 18, 2007 11:41:22 AM

Yah, I guess I just need me some of those goggles they used when they tested nukes back in the day...lol

The ads at least are out of the way, unlike here. And the site loads SOOOOOOOOOOOO much faster. Doesn't have all the "Your reply was successfully posted" screens either.
September 18, 2007 12:02:14 PM

I use mozilla, so I don't see ads in the actual posts here at all. The confirmation screen does seem redundant, but maybe it is to take the load off when refreshing ?
September 18, 2007 12:53:51 PM

Toms without adblock would be absolutely unreadable in my opinion.
September 18, 2007 1:09:27 PM

@jys84

Great idea! I'm gonna start with that now! I wonder how many times I'm gonna write that before the forum gets the hint. I should probably put it in clipboard, because I expect I'll be using it at least 20 times in the next 5 minutes.

@forum

ROFL. There's ads here? I got a hosts file that blocks out alot of ads, just search google.com for 'HOSTS file'. It's the first entry. I see no ads on here ever. LOL @ toms. No ad support from me!
September 18, 2007 1:25:10 PM

Watch it cyber; guess what happens when too many people use adblock? Yep right. No firefox support anymore. I'll have to take myself on my own nose and stop bragging about adblock.
