Trying to decide between these two... Here's a general spec rundown (specs
that are relevant to me anyway):
Asus A730W:
Same Ram, Same OS, same WiFi
3.7" VGA screen
520Mhz
1.3 magapix cam
HP hx4700/4705:
Same Ram, Same OS, same Wifi
4.0" VGA screen
624Mhz
No cam
Both are comparably priced - Asus is about 20 bucks less than the HP @
newegg and I believe the Asus is smaller/lighter. Asus also throws in an
extra battery, although you can't charge it while you're using the PDA so it
really functions more as a true spare rather than a method of extending your
time away from the docking station.
I'd probably use the camera in the Asus, even if just as a toy - it's not
great, but 1.3 megapix isn't all that bad for recreational & casual
documentation of stuff. A highly subjective question, but do you think the
incrased screen realestate & cpu power of the HP is enough to justify axing
the cam? Never owned a PDA before and don't know exactly how high I should
prioritize 0.3 inches of screen or 100Mhz of CPU speed. If they're
negligable, I'd probably just rather have a cam to play with. But on the
other hand, if they make a big difference, I do own a superior digi cam
already, and by no means "need" the one in the Asus...

I have teh ASUS a730W I love the size and weight of it - I love
everything about it in fact except for it's dismal battery life.
You can carry a spare but as you say it can't be charged except in the
unit which is annoying.
I did get from here:
http://www.boxwave.com/ an external battery charger which runs on AA batteries which is very
useful if you just can't get to a power source but what I'd really
like is an external spare battery charger. Then I'd swap the battery
with a spare and pop the dead battery into a battery charger in my
purse attached to the AA battery charger. Could go on forever that
way! Now I find if I let the battery go to far down and then attach
the charger I can't keep working as the battery charger can't keep up
with me as I work. I have to let it sit for a while "on charge" before
I can use it again.
Other than the battery life I highly recommend the ASUS

I plan on connecting to a WiFi network (@ home & work) whenever possible, so
the battery thing will probably be a relevant issue with me, whichever one I
choose.
I don't understand what these numbers actually measure, but the Asus comes
with "1100mAh" batteries. Mobile Planet has a 1800mAh "extended battery"
that you can get for the A730; whether or not it'll fit in an A730W is
likely, but that's an assumption. Seems a shame to have to buy a battery in
the face of having received 2 with the unit, but in the absense of a
stand-alone charger for the 2nd Asus battery, you're still faced with a
problem to solve. Here's the 1800mAh battery I saw:

I seems that with the charger you mentioned, the battery life is not a
big issue.
One thing I have not seen is reviews of the USB host in the ASUS A730W.
If you can connect a thumb drive or even an external hard drive to its
USB port you can have very large of storage space available for MP3,
Movies, files, etc. Has anyone used this feature?
Does anyone know about another PDA that supporst a USB host?
