WindowsXP built-in drivers support directly basic scanning functions of this
scanner. The installation of Umax drivers is not necessary. The limitation
of the Microsoft drivers is the lack of support for scan buttons and
transparency adapters.

I read the statement above to mean that you remove any and all traces of the
previous attempts and let Windows XP install the built in driver.
