Ic, so sometime before the new year 65nm will be out on the AMD side, but with no official date who knows.

The 65nm chips are due in Dec. They should demo the quad core server chip in Dec. The 4x4 platform should launch in the second week of Nov.

Good, a 4x4 just in time for winter

If we are all lucky.. windows vista will force a large chunk of the population to buy new computers.. and this may result in us finally getting some good 64bit dual core.. quad core designed applications and video games.

And please take that with a grain of salt. I hate being forced to upgrade, i just want something to actually take advantage of what the enthusiasts have been into for the last few years.. 64 bit architecture.. and now dual core. Although its a shame we are going to need 4 gb systems to run anything.. oh well.

Whats the deal on CPU socket requirements for this K8L?
Is it going to be an AM2 part or too early to tell?

It will be AM2 (or AM2+) it doesn't matter because AM2+ chips will work on AM2 boards too. 8)

And what is K8L, basically what conroe was to P4?

K8L or Barcelona will use the same socket as Opteron. Socket F. 4X4 will use this socket also.
The AM2 versions will be dual core only but they will have the Bulldozer core (mobile K8L).

A major revision of K8 for higher performance.
Probably will not have the dramatic improvement in performance as C2D vs P4 / P-D.

I hope you got money 'cause the 4x4 platform is only compatible with Socket F CPUs, not Socket AM2.

Ya sure 4x4 will b expensive, but It will b upgradable to Quad core k8L! It means AMD will have an 8 Core platform when Intel will have a true Quad core.
The money spent on the motherboard wont b a waste.

But then again will It have HyperTransport 3.0?

Asus and probably others are making boards speciffically for 4X4 so they will not be as expensive as wksta server boards. The chips are starting at around $500 apiece for FX70.

Everything else is the same price as AM2.

Registered DDR2 memory modules are needed.

Well, actually it will not be like this.
When Intel will have quadcores AMD will have dualcores. 4x4 is a 2P solution, and Intel have faster 2P solutions than AMD right now. When AMD releases K8L quadcore CPUs, Intel will release improved and higher clocked 45nm Core2. So, again we'll se the XE6800 vs FX-62 perfromance scenario. When Intel releases native quadcore(all quadcored are true BTW), we'll see an octacore by "glueing" two quadcores on same package.

Form everything I have seen AMD confirmed registered will not be needed... "unlike multi-core Opteron implementations of the past, 4x4 will requires only standard DDR2 DIMMs ".

Not that it makes a difference to me I still think its overpriced...

You got that the wrong way around. People won't upgrade till the software is available ;)
I for one won't be, i don't need to :)

Haha! I wondered if you knew how over priced 4x4 is going to be when you made your first post :)
Good choice is all i can say.
