OK guys. I am about to go to bed but will check back in the morning and I am hoping y'all can help me out.
I am playing Doom3 and BattleFront II. Not that it REALLY matters cause I can play just fine, but Doom3 holds steady at 60FPS and BFII holds at 80FPS. I do NOT have v-sync on but have all settings to the highest (not ultra for doom) with 8x AA and 4xAnisotropic at 1600x1200. The FPS goes down some during heavy battle but will NEVER go above the aforementioned FPS.
What is the deal?
I am using a CRT monitor set to 85hz(max).
I have an e6600@3.294Ghz (9x366) currently using Zalman 7700cu cooler
P5B deluxe wifi edition (bios 0711)
OCZ performance series (not available anymore) DDR2 667 (4x512) at 4-4-4-7 timings.
eVGA 7800GT overclocked to about 500/1140 with Accelero cooler (runs about 60-65C under load) not sure exactly what drivers but they were the latest about 1 month ago
Antec true power 2.0 (i think that's it) 550W PSU
Antec p180 case
2x 74Gb raptors in raid 0 (boot)
X-Fi extreme music
DVD DL burner
250Gb seagate 7200.9 (sata) and WD1600 (ide) for storage
I thinks that is all the hardware.
computer is stable using 2 instances of prime95 torture test max heat/power consumption (in place ftt's) for 2hours with temps reaching about 70C cpu and 43C mobo.
when playing games or anything else the temps reach about 55C cpu and 38C mobo.
computer completes super pi 1M in a little over 15 sec and I get like ~8400 in 3dmark05 and about 4700 in 3dmark06
Pretty sure that my problem is not a hardware issue but more like some stupid little obscure software setting or something.
So... anybody run across anything like this before or have any ideas? I am pretty sure I should get more FPS, especially considering it holds steady at the above framerates for really long periods of time but doesn't ever go above by even 1FPS EVER.
Hope somebody has some thoughts that can help me.
maybe someone with similar specs could post their FPS for these games for a comparison?
Anyways, thanks for reading and any replies are greatly appreciated.
This may seem obvious, but have you checked in your video card's option?
Control Panel > Display > Settings > Advanced
I have an ATI video card, so I cannot check this, but your card might an option to enable vsync somewhere in there that may be enabled by default and forcing all applications to run at a limited FPS.
You can assume that it's a software/driver issue, though. Do you have the latest drivers?
I think your best bet is to just check around your video card's options for something.
yeah i checked every vid card setting i could find and am sure that v-sync is off. anyways, if v-sync was on, wouldn't it max out at 85FPS for both games? That is what is bothering me. one maxes at 60 and the other at 80. I would think with v-sync they would both max at the same FPS, e.g. 60 FPS.
doom 3 is fixed at 60 fps in mutiplayer mode and in single player mode but its possible to un cap it only in single player mode using the "com_fixedTic 0''command in the console
not sure about BF2 but i suspect it has a similar cap and corresponding command

I have a BFG OC 7800Gt and it sounds like you have reached the fill rate limit for the card. Even OCd you will only get so much perf out of the card.
Usually it's the tilde (~) button, but most times you have to edit some commands. Just google Doom 3 cheats and it will tell you how to open the console.
trying not to be harsh but it seems that you are pulling answers out of your azz. I think if you post things that actually make sense you might increase your credibility in these forums.

just a thought. :!:
7800GT peak fill rate: 6.8G pixels/sec EDIT: crap thats the 6800U, the 7800 is 6.4G, but yeah 3% 2% who cares, goes to show that fillrate doesnt mean much!
1600 X 1200 = 1920000
1920000pixel * 80FPS = 153600000 pixels/sec
153600000 / (1 giga) 1073741824 = 0.1430511474609375 G pixels/sec
I guess each pixel can take up to 50 cycles before getting to the peak theoretical fill rate. I still don't think those number are relevant in most real life benchmark and I had way to much time on my hand
Thanks everyone for the replies. I am pleased with everyone's knowledge with one exception . Anyways you guys surely know your stuff.
I was just mostly curious why the FPS were capped, but I think it is rather clear now. I was mostly confused by my memory of seeing reviews of hardware showing Doom3 as a benchmark tool to differentiate between hardware performance and thus was wondering why I was not reaching these higher framerates that I thought I remembered seeing.
