i used to run a review site where we tested items in labs as neutrally as we could (as actual users) and supplemented conclusions with public experiences.

when my site posted something carefully double-checked and still contentious, i received many personal complaints from bigger publishers (i.e. magazine writers) who were almost emotionally loyal to certain vendors. the vendors did not complain.

reviewers should be aware that they bring a personal and cultural bias to their reporting, and should ideally include some comment on this in their conclusions. ideally, technically specialists would be trained in media and culture before writing.

imho :)
