Not only does the U.S. have the worst "broadband" service compared to the rest of the world, we also get to pay more for it than the rest of the world.

What I find scary is the amount of people that still use 56k dial-up services. There won't be a major push for higher bandwidths until all those users upgrade, and more people complain about the service...or lack of...that they were promised.
One example of this is my home internet connection. I tend to work at home in the evenings (such as right now..), and the current service I have, which is 15 Mbit down, 1 Mbit up, more often than not, is congested, and I very rarely reach those speeds (Many cases, only half). The network here is gettng rather crowded on my node, and yet, after several complaints, I have seen nothing change in over 3 years.
I find this unsuprisingly associated with the telephone company vs cable company vs satellite company discussions....

I have Comcast. I did have Adelphia which was in bankruptcy and being ran by their employees. Comcast and Time Warner bought Adelphia and divided up the company between them. I got stuck with Comcast.
I just ran a speed test at testmy.net and here is the result:
Nothing to brag about but not all that bad either.
Download Connection is:: 3010 Kbps about 3.01 Mbps (tested with 2992 kB)
Download Speed is:: 367 kB/s
Upload Connection is:: 361 Kbps about 0.4 Mbps (tested with 579 kB)
Upload Speed is:: 44 kB/s
Tested From:: http://testmy.net (Main)
Test Time:: 2007/08/24 - 10:34pm
for me

For me.
Last Result:
Download Speed: 2876 kbps (359.5 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 705 kbps (88.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Verizon DSL, so I'm getting nearly what what they promised. Only Charter available for cable here, and after years of raising rates and lies, I'll never use them again, so it's DSL for me.
I still get calls from our business customers who are paying over £70 a month for a 512Kb cable connection.. Daft buggers only need to ask and they can have a free upgrade to 10Mb and half that price...
Of course the scouse never pays anything....

I've found Comcast equipment to be slow... If you buy your own equipment you'll get a lot more speed out of the same connection....
I got a guy right now that I'm changing out Comcast equipment on.... Base unit is a Netgear Modem & wireless g all in one unit... He has a SMC USB on his remotes that is Comcast as well...
Problem started when he installed Skype.... If he started a conversation on Skype withen 2 minutes his SMC would puke & he'd loose the connection.... He couldn't D/L anything the SMC would puke.... Of course running broadband on USB is crazy, but Comcast set him up with the whole thing....
He had Comcast out on Monday.... They told him he needed a signal booster for $50... I told him no USB even with a signal booster will keep you connected on Skype or a D/L for long.... It ends up overwhelming the USB buss & shuts down....
To prove it to him, I took over one of my Linksys wireless g cards & put it in his machine.... That took care of staying connected.... Once I installed the card I started D/Ling Farcry demo & talking on Skype.... The card didn't miss a beat......
Then I looked at the D/L speed & saw it was going to take over 3 hours to D/L the demo..... Before I went over to his place I D/Led the same file on my rig.... It took 1 hour 20 minutes.... That tipped me off that there were other problems...
I ran the speed test on the remote we were working on & it got 3300 down is all.... I went to the base unit a ran the same test.... It got 11000.... Right then I knew that the Comcast Netgear unit was limiting the wireless connections.... The Linksys card could handle anything thrown at it, but the Netgear was only broadcasting 1/3rd of the bandwidth that was available.... It only makes sense for Comcast to limit there bandwidth of their customers... It's to their benefit, really...
That brings me to today... We ordered a Motorola SBG 900 broadband modem & wireless g unit... I'm going to install that & 2 new Lynksys wireless g cards on his remotes today.... I can tell you, we'll get more than the 11000 to the base unit & what we get at the base, we'll get at the remotes as well.... Then we'll call Comcast up & tell them to come & get their equipment!!!!
I'll post the numbers later to follow this up.... This is about the 4th time I've done this to Comcast, so I'm confident that he's gonna be in hog heaven later!!!!

yeah net gear is kinda garbage anyways, but youre prolly right when you say that comcast is limiting theyre stuff, it would make sense that they could control their units then someones after market unit. you know i might actually try that, now that you mention it. might take a little fetty, but i should be able to do it here recently. do you recommend the motorla? or is there another solid brand that you know of?

The first modem I had was a Toshiba..... It went out in about a year.... I bought the Motorola to replace that one at least 3 years ago... It's been a rock for me every since...
Linksys has a broadband modem I'd like to try out, but I haven't had the chance yet... The guy across the street has a Linksys modem & wireless router going... They look nice the way they stack... I don't know what he's cranking for speed though... He's not around much to check it out either... [shrug]

My netgear broadband modem/router is pretty good actually. Much better than the Belkin 'one' I had (replaced twice under warranty and the third one died too).
I never use the box the broandband supplier sends you - they're usually cr*p, and RC's experience proves they can't always be trusted either.
a more deviant person would say hack his wireless...

Old Netgear = 12574 down 2429 up
New Motorola = 13468 down 2440 up
Remote old = 2553 down 1240 up
Remote new = 4583 down 2410 up
The remote is down in the basement, so the signal goes through the floor, meaning it's a floor below the base..... I believe a wireless N would carry a stronger signal in this situation.... However the Price / Performance on the N puts it out of the picture for this guy..... I expected better results on the remotes, but double the original signal is more than worth the upgrade in my book....
Disclaimer: I have found this to be true in every case I've applied it on..... Your results may very.... Like anything else, you pays your dues, you takes your chances!!!!

Damn, I was expecting better from RR - but it is a busy day on the node [/fcukin' excuses]
My only other option (right now) is Knowledgy which is no option at all really from what I hear.
I'll try it tonight when it won't be as congested.
