My iPaq H5555 went nuts last week (looked like a
bad battery) but after reseting it a few times including
a couple of full resets it started charging again.

First advice: A bad battery or charger may just be a
very confused iPaq (according to HP Support and my
experience with this one.)

Of course, I had a backup so the hard reset seemed
like no big deal until I restored it (three times) and
it kept giving me a message about needing to be
hard reset again. Arrgghh!

A backup that wouldn't take -- and there is no way
to pre-test these things since that would screw a
working machine IF they failed.

Ok, so I finally did the hard reset AGAIN, and first
re-installed EVERY PROGRAM (in ActiveSync)
that I remembered putting on this device. It was
probably one of the updates which likely modified
system memory/eeprom or somthing.

Second advice: If you have a bad Restore, try hard
reset, then install all programs previously running,
THEN do the RESTORE of the actual backup.

Happy iPaq; Happy me.

Not just iPaqs, my XDA did something similar. Started loosing charge at
about 10% in 10 minutes, even when on the charger. I hard reset it quickly,
while there was still enough charge left for it to boot afterwards. I had
more luck than you did; I was able to restore my Sprite backup afterwards
without causing the problem again.

Didn't you have older backups to try? Backup to card, then copy the card
backup to PC. I keep one backup a week for the last month on my card, and
one backup a month since purchase on my PC. When I need to restore I work
my way backwards to the most recent backup that didn't have whatever problem
I'm trying to eliminate.

Glad to hear yours was not quite so exciting an
experience but I did recover.

Spent about 2 weeks (busy with other stuff) where
it looked like it was going to the shop before I got
lucky on a reset (after many attempts).

Then after the bad restore(s) and then following the
procedure I described(restore all programs THEN
the backup) it works great again.

I got back on with the Restore programs THEN backup
(which should not have been necessary OR EVEN
different.)
