Hi all, I’m new to this forum but browse threads here quite often. I need some help overclocking a Conroe 6600. I have read other posts here and this chip seems to be able to reach 3.0 Ghz + with no problems but the problem I have is, I have the Asus P5B-VM mATX board. I have heard that this board isn’t very good for overclocking but I should at least be able to reach 3.0 Ghz shouldn’t I? So I’m asking you good people if you can help with a step-by-step guide on overclocking this chip. Please note that the BIOS for this motherboard only allows the memory voltage to peak at 1.9v crap I know but there’s nothing I can do about that. My system specs are as follows –
Crucial 2GB Ballistix DDR2 PC2-8000
420-watt power supply
P5B-VM Motherboard
Remember that 3ghz is a 25% overclock on that bad boy. Many people have gotten up there, but processors and motherboards differ in their OC capabilities.
The E6600 is my processor of choice, at least for recommendations. I still have my S939 system. If I was to rebuild from scratch I would choose the E6600, hands down, no arguement. It beats anything AMD has and does so at a low price.
Thanx for you help guys but im not sure if this motherboard is even up for a 3Ghz+ overclock. with regards to a bios update, that could take months. i'm gonna follow the overclocking guide posted here and ill keep you updated as to the results. who knows i may be able to get a decent overclock on an mATX motherboard.
Have you tried to up the FSB at all yet? What is the multiplier on the e6600 anyway? I'm guessing 9, so that is 333FSB for 3Ghz, right? You should'nt have a problem with the ram as 1.9vdimm should by sufficient for your overclock although you may not get the desired speed or timings from the RAM and those volts.
One thing you can do if you don't want to have to reboot alot, is download Clockgen and use it to find a good stable OC for you and then set it up that way in the BIOS.
What you would want to do, is obviously download clockgen and start it up. Run 2 instances of Prime95 while your OC'ing, this will help you find your limit quickly. I am very curious about this as well b/c I was interested in that board and en e6400
Yeah the default multiplier is x9. No i havent had a play about in the bios yet as my last chip was an Athlon XP3000 and i wasnt familiar with Intel overclocking. Will that software allow me to overclock in windows? Does it find the maximum overclock automatically if so that would be great.
Just follow Wusy's guide since that covers pretty much all you need to know step by step wise... if you still can't get it up there even after following all the instructions... than thats pretty much it.
Also keep track of your temps... don't know how the airflow is in your case...
Clockgen will allow you to overclock in Windows, but will not bring you even close to your max overclock (most of the time.) I recommend simply following wusy's guide as best you can, and coming here with questions. BIOS overclocking is the easiest and safest, you dont have to do it all at once. Bump up the FSB a bit when you start up in the morning and just make notes of your adjustments. When my room was more chilly, I used to run at 4.0Ghz and that took me over a week to get stable, I only restarted a couple times a day and it is less tedious that way.
