I have a intel D915gav motherboard with a LGA775 socket and it is about 2 years old. Does anybody if I can use a core 2 duo in it? I looked at the intel site about what are the supported processors for this board but it didn´t show C2D, but it may be outdated. I also tried to ask intel´s online help but it gave me a broken link to supported processors. Thanks

Intel 915 series chipsets DO NOT SUPPORT DUAL-CORE CPUS.
You may damage your CPU or the system may not POST.

Ok, thanks.

You can use only Pentium 4 / Celeron D CPUs but not Pentium D / Core 2 Duo CPUs.

I think 965 and 975 are the 2 chipsets to support core duo right now.

These chipsets also support C2D from personal experience:

Intel 945G
VIA P4M890
VIA PT880 Pro

I’m sure there are others also. The issue is as much about the VRM as the chipset.

I'm currently running:

E6600 on a i945G mATX board
E6400 on a P4M800 mATX board (AGP and PC3200 ram)

Yes I know I'm gimping the 6400 but $$$ dictates least expensive routes until more $ is available...

add to the list the i865 and i875 (in theory, don't know of any current mobo maker using the i875 in a core2 duo platform, but the i865 is being used), and the later revison of the ATI xpress200
