Ok everyone, here's what's going on. I'm searching for music to listen to because lately I've been getting really sick of listening to the same formula music over and over again. I'm not talking about a need to go to Indie music.
What I want here is a list of what you all think are some of the BEST songs out there in terms of guitar solos. If you have one with an amazing bass solo or drum solo or keyboard solo or similar, that's ok too. I'm looking for anything from rock, metal, yeah even pop, though I doubt there are many songs to fit that in the Pop music world. I will even consider dipping into classical and country, although classical tends to be inherently mostly amazing solo and group work, instrumentally.
Rules:
- Up to 5 songs that you believe have a simply hair-raisingly amazing solo in them.
- The solo must be at least 30 seconds long, so no "quick cool bridge" songs.
- If someone has already listed your song, try to think of another song.
- No flamewars, no bashing people's taste in music, no opinionated garbage.
- The song may be entirely instrumental, but must have one section which never fails to raise the hair on the back of your neck each time you listen to it.
- One last rule, please no youtube links. I want mp3's I can find on iTunes or a similar store, or a CD I can go out and buy in a small store.
I simply want to know what you all think is some of the most amazing instrumentation you've ever heard. I really want to find some more stuff to check out, to see what is out there. I want you all to give me a small selection each of what I "absolutely need to listen to." I'll start off by listing a few of my own.
1) Pink Floyd - Another Brick in the Wall, Part 2 (Live)
2) Led Zeppelin - Stairway to Heaven
3) U2 - Silver and Gold (Live)
4) Megadeth - Trust
5) Metallica - The Unforgiven
Thanks, and let's all have some fun!
GL, you will get a lot of harshness here (beeing n00b and this being TH-OT)
Read the stickies and get ready.
One notable baseline comes from Black Sabbath - NIB.
Also, Steevie Ray Vaughn plays a mean blues guitar, get his live stuff.
After that PISS OFF YOU GIT!
Hey, welcome ...
Don't worry, I've been on these forums for a lot longer than my number of posts would suggest. I'm only capitalizing and punctuating correctly so that people won't mistake my meaning.
If you could make note of some of those Stevie songs, I'd love to check a small selection out.
WTF? I just came back after a whole lot of time and these forums are messed up...
Where is my post count that I worked so hard to raise? I thought we all knew that post count...is what counts?
It hides in your profile.. Never to be seen by others unless they go check it.. Crud really.
Tool - I knew you had been here a while but check out your profile:

how they hanging?

? nah, none of that no more...

iceman? you Chuck Lidell wannabee...
If you watch "Superbad" look in the background when "McLovin" is at the bar, there is Chuck fight on the T.V. I only saw it in theaters and saw it quick so didn't figure out which one it was.
And no...fighting is over for me, I haven't even been to one since the beginning of summer, but may go to the one this weekend.
Just started school today, so will probably hit Tom's up when I'm working for lack of anything better to do. Been pretty good, been really busy with baseball/softball until the last couple weeks so things have died down and now I can get caught up with the PC hardware/cooling happenings.
I am guessing you = sirheck?
Yeah AV, I made this site back in the late 60's and early 70's but had to wait for some idiots to officially unmask my creation of "the internet" so I could put it up. Ever hear of "the napster?" I am the real napster...

All the mature people I know don't ignore the BOLDED STICKIES on the infamous Other frontpage!
Not yet they haven't but I did just move into a house for the semester...hope it's safe here.
I'll be around, just not like I used to! Gotta go do some work though...my boss gets angry if I obviously do nothing the whole shift
@cpburns
I would quite like hear you scream as I beat you to death with an old Fender copy I have in the loft, does that count?
Rules:? Who the fcuk do you think you are?

LMAO. Another Nooblet goes bananas. You asked me what I thought. I think you've been Suckin' *** too long, pal. Lighten up.
The best guitar soloist I've ever heard was a guy by the name of Stuart Smith. He used to play at a bohemian cafe that I used to attend in my university days. Interestingly, the dude could actually sing too. I'm sure he has a album or two out by now.
Major bong smoker though. Who isn't right? Well, it was a stoners and feminists cafe, after all, so it should hardly be a surprise to you.
cpburns wrote : No flamewars, no bashing people's taste in music,
Your taste in music is sh*t.
cpburns wrote : no opinionated garbage.
Wait! That it's garbage is your opinion, opinionated garbage at that.
*shoots bjburns*
What makes me laugh is most of the goons asking 'wots ur fave toon' questions can't even play an instrument.
Bomber, are you sure you weren't listening to Stewart Smith, your famous classical harpsichordist?
Aaah, most of the pop stars don't right a note or a word. Why should the fans be any different?
Not unless the dude has long hair, a nose ring, a fully-grown beard and a serious grass addiction.
Disgracefully, or not, I don't even know who this Stewy Smith is. One of ours you say. Let me google that shite...
He's news to me,mate. lol Who the fock is he?
lol
Who's that Smack-Head over your way who's porking that used-to-be-fine model, Kate Moss? He can strum a pretty mean solo set, can't he? Or is that all crap?
That Oasis bloke could too, I'm sure. Gosh I loved their first album.
Pete Doherty and the Baby Shambles first album were fine. Noel (Even though he's a Manc) isn't bad either. Best I ever saw him was with Paul Weller on The White Room, their version of Talk Tonight was superb.

Edit for link.
Yeah, that Paul Weller rings a bell. I don't know why, but the name has sparked one of these booze-drenched brain cells of mine; enough to at least remember hearing something about the bloke. [/memorable]
Neighbours will be pissed of with me again, after finding that You tube vid I decided to pick up my guitar an belt it out a little too loud. It's one of those songs that sound so nice acoustically, I couldn't resist.
I take it they're not young, hip, cats?
If a man can't play his tunes loud occasionally then it's pretty sad for us, I'd reckon.
Fock me, they'd hate my guts if I was in your joint playing a mix session then. lol. At least yours is pleasant on the ear for most.
It's 05:15 here.
Oh, fock me! LMAO Tom.
Yeah, that changes things a little then. Crikeys. lol
I'm having a spot of insomnia.
Yeah mate, you have bouts of that, eh? What do you average for sleep per night? A few hours?
If that. Sometimes I don't sleep at all.
I don't do crank, I use it to pay your mum.
lol
What's it like living in Oklahoma?
Apart from the drug problems, is it a good place to live?
I guess the "no snakes" is a plus. lol
With 3.2% beer it's no wonder that Oklahomans are turning to crank.
It doesn't qualify as beer at 3.2%. Cooking lager is what it is. If you can name the drug, some fcuker around here is using it.
Quote : Cooking lager
LMAO. True. Beer battered fish is all that 3% lager is good for.
Fanny battered fish is twice as tasty. And the stench is delightful.
Oh gosh. As always, D, that truly is a disgraceful thought. lmao.
love it.
Outrageously, the prospect of that deep fried oil cooking along...
LOL. Why can I smell flesh? There's a meaty smell in my nostrils.
The mind plays tricks, even when one only thinks of it, rather than actually smells it.
Shite. I've dug the grave deep enough right there, I think. lol
Whatever happened to Pike anyway?
And who's to argue that a sex party with Margaret Thatcher would be all that bad?
Now imagine tucking into a deep fried tampon. A used one, of course. Full of clotted blood with an extra helping of womb lining.
My eyeballs watered through those three sentences. You are the grand master of outrageous remarks, mate. LMAO.
Oh jesus. That will be with me for a week. lol
Crikeys! Did I ever tell you that I was thrilled when you came back? If only for the humour, let alone the sagacious remarks spliced in between.
Whatever your day holds, D, I hope it's all good, mate.

???? Gone Already?
Well if you are gone you didn't last long, you just made the dickheads day if they got rid of you that easily!, however if you do check back?,
Machine Gun by Jimi Hendrix, Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd, Europa by Carlos Santana, Eruption by Van Halen, Whole Lotta Love by Led Zeppelin [Saw them live before Jon Bonham died!], well theres my 5.
Did I mention War Pigs by Black Sabbath, You shook me all night long by AC/DC, or Little Red Corvette by Prince?
However I am more partial to Drum Solos!
In-a-gadda-da-vida [Totally a Classic] > Iron Butterfly
Get Ready [Long Version 21:28 min] > Rare Earth
Eyes of the World [disk 1] Crazy Fingers [disk 2] > Grateful Dead [Live]/ One From the Vault
Grateful Dead was an experience all by itself, Jerry Garcia was one of the greatest guitarists that ever lived, a lot of his work was accompanied by Bass Guitar and Drums in their live performances and sometimes he'd do a stand alone solo.
Before he died I caught 3 of Grateful Deads performances live, theres not any other group I went back to see more than one time, their drum solos [2 drummers] were always different with each live performance, they were an awesome experience!
To save you some trouble > http://guitar.about.com/library/bl100greatest.htm
And I'll leave you with this, No Solos but a great song! > Because of You > Nickleback
Have a great day! Ryan
