Comparing a few choices here. Deff going with socket 939.
Athlon 64 3700+ is a cpu i have my eye on.
other possibilities are the x2 series.
the 64 3700+ = 89$
the 64 4000+ = 137$
the x2 4200+ = 202$ 202 is a bit pricey for me.
DiDn't really notice that much of a diff from the 3700+ and the 4200+ except the price....the 2800+ was great for what i did.. so i can't even imagine how much better this 3700+ system will run.
89$ retail is really looking like an excellent deal.
Anything im missing here?
Money is an option.. so this 89$ CPU is really looking like a great deal.
Looking to pair this up with a Asus A8N 5x board which is only 74$
there are TONS of better cpu's then the 3700+ in performance wise.
so in years to come if i ever really wanted to, i can just buy a new CPU and pop it in.
Where as with the AM2... i don't have the money to buy new RAM.
I could of sworn the AM2 platform doesn't use DDR pc3200 it only uses the new DDR2?
well that's what i thought anyways, cause that's the main thing from stopping me beacuse i don't have that much money for a full upgrade and im saving my memory, drives, cases and psu from my current setup. My mobo just died so this is the reason for the upgrade.
so for what im going with right now ... 3700+ and this a8N 5x board for only 74$ this will leave me room for a fairly decent pci-e graphics card...
am i wrong about the AM2 memory thing? if i am then maybe i might switch over to the AM2.
my price limit is around 500 and under for what i need.
Go with the AM2 system and buy an asrock MB.They have a particular model that supports bothe DDR and DDR2 as well as bothe the AM2 socket and S-939.This should be in your price range and will allow you to upgrade to an AM2 processor and still use your DDR memory.I believe that's the way it is.Anyways, just a thought i had while I was reading your post.Goodluck.
I must admit, even though my system is dated(it is only 5 months old...), I love it. A socket 939 3700+ sandy is a good chip, if you're on a budget. If you have the money to spare, try going for AM2 and/or and X2 series - much more future proof.
Ugh, I didn't really help you make up your mind, did I? The deal you found is a very good one, and if you are on a budget, go for it.
Well I guess, if its not possible to buy ddr2, then stick to the socket 939. I mean, after all the speed is nearly equal to that of the Am2 platform.
Dont get the 4000+ 939 unless you REALLY need the extra performance. Because between the 4000+ and the 3800+ theres a diff of about $40. So um .. . just get the 3700+ or the 3800+, whichever is available in your area.
If you are dead set on S939, I would suggest the best X2 chip you can afford. Socket 939 is discontinued and will not be getting any cheaper. X2-4800 is already scarce, and others will disappear soon. Dual core is already very nice and will be required soon. Even running single threaded apps, dual core is nice since your work is not getting interrupted for other OS and background stuff like antivirus and whatnot. Modern OS is never really single threaded since you have dozens of background processes that poke their head up now and again. The second core can play whack-a-mole while the first core has undivided concentration on your app.
Only reason im able to even upgrade is cause my MOBO died.
I have a perfectly good system here, with my 1GB pc3200 Corsair XMS im not going to let it go to waste and buy more memory for a AM2 ..
also AM2 is sorta new, coulda be bugs and issues.. and im not to thrilled with boards that support so many diff things.
Socket 939 been out for awhile now..
i think the
Asus A8N
Athlon 3700+
and my existing 1GB pc3200 Corsair XMS
and my new PCi-E Graphics card will make quite the system.
im sure it's going to blow away my xp2800+ Asus A7n8x Rig i had.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
When i build this system and pop in my existing Hard Drive... Will it boot?
or am i going to have to RE-format the drive since i made a Mobo, Gfx and CPU change..
I would assume a new Format? Also will i have a problem Re Registering for this XP copy again. it's a legit copy. Oh well i'll figure a way around it if i can't get any info on here.
