A short survey to answer the question "What is a Quiet or Silent PC worth to you?" at silentpcreview.com's Survey on PC Noise. What is your opinion on PC noise? Have your say!
I don´t know the dB levels of my box, but it ain´t quiet.
Quiet for me is when something doesn´t make a sound.
My computer generates lots of noise, it sings and dances..ehrm...not really.
Anyway, I wish that I had a "silent" computer as it is in my livingroom where I also sleep.
But it has it´s advantages though, I don´t have to listen to my neigbours (jeeze, how do you spell that?) tv habits.
His tv noise is overwhelmed by my computer...better a constant buzzing than chatter with various dB peaks, for me anyway.
But like right now, I can hear the little waterfall I've got going for the cats to drink out of in the other room. That's the acceptable level for me.
Of course, when it gets really hot (i.e. I turn off the A/C and turn on the attic fan) and I crank all the fans up to 12v, that waterfall gets drowned out...
my pc is LOUD
17 fans in it or so...
but its good because it keeps me from the outside world distractions whitch is emmitted by the people residing in the same house as I
also my computer is really happy because not many computers experience tornadoes and huricanes inside the case
The noise level isnt too bad because my audigy eax can incorporate that noise in some preaty algorithms that make it sound
Well with 14 fans and 2 PSUs my system produces quite much noise, but my casefans are temp controlled, so an a normal cold day I got the following fans running:
3x PSU fans (dual=fan EnerMax)
1x GPU fan (soon to be replaced by watercooling)
1x NorthBridge fan (soon to be replaced by watercooling)
1x 120mm Delta HP fan slowed down with Rheostat and resistors (otherwise is produces way to much noise) cooling my radiator of my watercooling
1x 80mm 2300 rpm Coolermaster casefan blowing air towards my mobo from the side of my case.
2x 60mm HD fan
Most of the noise is produced by the casefan and radiator fan, but I'm trying to see if I can make them a little more quiet.
I can only hear me old ATA66 7200rpm Maxtor drive when it is seaking, I can't hear my new Seagate Barracuda IV drives in RAID 0.
It is a bit to loud, but not that bad compared to full air-cooling.
Well I have a full-tower case with place for just one PSU above the mobo. I sawed another hole in the case that was large enough that I could mount the second PSU just like the first one... I only needed a small wire that is attached to the top of the case (in the inside) to support it. So my case is fully closed (except for the blowholes ofcourse.)
That's the beauty of a full tower case. There is no mod you cannot make to a full tower case, to fit whatever-in-the-hell you came up with during the week. You can make a self contained water cooling kit, and external housefan conduit input (for blowing that January -20C ambient air directly inside the case), an external IDE overclocked burner.
Even the cheapest full tower case (metal; no plastic) OwNez J00!!!!
Yup, I 'love' my case... I also painted it dark blue and added some LEDs to make it look cool.
But my case is filled with so much components that my waterresevoir, radiator and pump (in resevoir) stand next to it build into a K'Nex tower.
silent? how bout a silent and cool one? gdamn it feels like i have a woodburning stove, aka dual amd 1800's, under my desk. it's pretty sad that in order to get decent temps so this isn't pumping out more heat than my furnace in the middle of winter is:
like i'm doing now with one side of the case off, with an 18" house fan blowing on it.
or
mod the case from here to the local strip joint and add a dozen fans.
even with ac kicking, i could not imagine walking into a room with a rack full of amd servers.
Surprised at the number or irreverant remarks. Seriously I know people who have rather sensitive hearing and would rather that their PC's be silent. I wouldn't mind a completely silent PC that I could run as a server in my apartment, it would let me sleep at night.

I'm not too anal about quiet computers, but I don't want a loud one. I had to put up with a loud ass computer for many users, and now I ultra-appreciate my quiet one now.
Btw, our power was out for just under 9 hours today. You never realize how much you life depends on electricity until it goes out. No fridge, tv, music, computers, etc. Right as I'm feeling all badass and medieval doing non-electric stuff, the power comes back on, and here I am
I'm not a total nerdo, I still fish and do other stuff btw
The only noisy thing in my PC is the CPU HSF. I don't use any case fan, my grafix card is passive cooled. Though the CPU fan is not very quiet, it's bearable.
In fact, I don't care about noise much- unless it;s like GF-FX 5800 Ultra noise.

I don't care about the loudness of a PC, only its speed. It can sound like a jet and I would still buy it as long as its fast! I've got 12 fans running in my current rig; 5 case fans, one on vid card, 2 on power supply, my HSF, and 3 HDD coolers. Its considered kinda loud to my friends but I don't mind. My only drawback is the jungle of wires that are in there, its hard to keep them organized!
