PC Hangs on restart and shutdown.

Friend of mine has built almost identical system to the one in my sig and he is now saying that when he performs a shutdown or restart computer goes through all the processes of shutting windows down screens go blank and than after that the system just hangs. When he manually turns the system off and turns it back on it starts up fine. Also when the system hangs he can hit the "RESET" button on his case and it restarts. Any help???

Im totally lost on this one. sounds like HD failuer but im unsure..bad sectors maybe?

Been there tried that didnt work unfortunatly. next idea??

Have already done all the standard tests ie memory tests hd tests.. all clean.. done all the beginner stuff.

This is not something that was doing it on the initial build.. it actually started about 2 months of perfect running.

time to think outside the box.. lets get smart here

Corrupt or bad driver not releasing resources on shutdown? Anything obvious showing up in the event log?
