After seven years of Palm Pilot use (I started with the ORIGINAL USR
PPP!!) I have finally switched to an IPAQ rz1710. I use this PRIMARILY
as an organiser, so Calender, contacts and

And I am having NO END of problems setting up some sort of sync
schedule that is conveniant!

I can;t get used to this idea of only being able to sync on two
computers. Further, it is not possible to sync with outlook on my work
computer (for reasons to complicated to go in to.)

So, assuming that I

a) Work out my HOME sync issues myself.

b) Only use my work lap top as a GUEST user (i.e. no sync, but can
install and access files).

What is the best way of backing up my calender, notes, tasks and
contacts while on the road, on my laptop, without syncing with
OUTLOOK? I just need to take a regular mirror copy so that I can
restore everything in times of catastrophy!!

Is there a software package that can dump it to an SD card?

Is there some sort of "PALM DESKTOP" alternative I can use on my work
laptop?

(I cant sync with OUTLOOK at work, because we use a DOMINO server with
an outlook connector and I dont appear to be able to stop activesync
uploading ALL my personal appointments since 1999 to the company email
server!!)

OY .... I'm sure I had all these problems when I started out with
PALM, but I'm HOTSYNC friendly now and I can cope (my old Palm Vx is
acting as a backup diary at home until Im sure I have this one
nailed.) To date I have managed to lose EVERYTHING out of my calender
for five years and had to restore it from the Palm master copy!!

All advice gratefully recieved!!

The iPaq should have come with a backup program to back up to an SD
card - I don't have that particular iPaq, but pretty much all Pocket
PCs have come with a 3rd party program to back up to SD.

You can also take a look at Sprite Backup
(http://www.spritesoftware.com).

No - ActiveSync only synchronizes with Outlook. Check out IntelliSync
(http://www.pumatech.com) and XTNDConnect PC
(http://www.extendedsystems.com) for synchronizing with Domino though.

Just a fellow convert (from Palm to PPC) commiserating with you. I like many
things about my new Dell Axim X50v, but, as far as PDA organizers go, it
ain't no Palm.

MS just doesn't seem to be able to get its software right, or they're
testing it on users that don't think like me! :-)

I got mine to sync to both my home PC and my office one. OK. But I don't
care for the way ActiveSync "thinks". You'll see I vented in another post,
somewhere above.

You can't choose to simply have the device overwrite the desktop (or
vice-versa); you can't choose which way you'd like a conflict resolved,
which is a SERIOUS shortcoming, imho. It means you really can't use both the
device and the PC to schedule appts or tasks because, if there's a conflict,
you have to decide in advance (before you know there's a conflict) whether
the PC will override the device or vice-versa OR you have to dump all the
conflicts on the device and try to clean them up later.

You apparently can't set your choice of a time for tasks- the device uses
Outlooks pre-set "default" time.

On the plus side, I love my Axim's WiFi, IR, and Bluetooth wireless
connectivity and its ability to be synced with a bluetooth GPS receiver to
become a GPS unit.

Anyway, enough for now. I hope you get your issues resolved. I'm working on
mine. :-)
