Hi there,

Please take a step back and tell us about your computer, make, model, CPU, RAM, OS using.
Also very important is when your computer worked normally last, and what have you downloaded or installed recently, that may have affected your icons.

Also be more specific as to what ICONS are present and absent. For example, do you mean your volume control is missing from the notification tray, or your WiFi or wired network icons are missing. Does the takbar look normal, just without icons, is the taskbar locked?

Finally, is this a work related computer/lapatop that could be affected by Group Policy or a home enthusiast computer?
That way the group can help you pin down the problem.

A simple example, some of the dell Win-XP computers have the speaker icon disappear which can be reset, and some of the WiFi adapters cause icon changes that can be corrected by making a change in the Windows Features area.

Hello again,

OK, the taskbar icons are ALL missing including the start Orb? Is the taskbar there, or is it missing also?

Before looking deeper, the taskbar can be (by mistake or otherwise) Auto hidden so you can't see it without putting your mouse cursor down to the taskbar area, it can be "pulled down" out of sight, so you have to pull it back up, or even you can move it and hide it on any othe the other 3 sides of the desktop. Check to see that those actions might not have occurred by mistake.

If that's not it, click in the control panel on Notification Icons and at the bottom, make sure the system icons are turned on.

If you mean all the control panel icons or the Notification Area Icons are grayed out, run a full antivirus and malware scan to make sure these changes aren't the effect of a virus.

If those all check out, then go back and review when your computer worked normally last, and what programs you have downloaded or installed since then.
