Losing my joystick port...

If I upgrade my present soundcard (Audigy 2 ZS) to a X-Fi one, I will lose my joystick/MIDI port. I do need to connect my MIDI port though. Rather than buying an expensive USB Midi Mate (or something like that), could I also activate my onboard sound, which has a joystick port, and use that for MIDI purposes, while I use the dedicated soundcard for everything else?
