Alright basic run down..

Have 2 WD Raptor SATAs in a raid have been running sweet for about 2 months now..

Decided I needed more space so I grabbed a Maxtor 160gig SATA toss it in.
Turned on the 3rd SATA port in the bios.. it shows up on post and in the bios however..

It does not show up in windowsXP.. tried tossing in my XP disk.. figuring install XP on it to format and what not than just dump everything off of it. WindowsXP setup did not recognize it either.

Tried the Maxblast Windows program.. nothing there. downloaded the Maxblast ISO boot CD.. not listed there either.

Anyone have any ideas I might try to get this to work.

Daid you chaeck to make sure your jumpers are right. I understand that are no master/slave configs on SATA but I seem to recall reaading that there may be a jumper that you need to set the sata mode by. I coiuld easily be wrong but its worth a look. :)

BTW , did format it when you put XP disk in?

Hi, you usually have to go to disk management in the computer management options and activiate you disk followed by setting up a partition and quick formatting it!

That should get your disk recognised!

Hope that helps!

Have you tried Control panel, Administrative Tools, computer management, disk management, and initializing the drive?

Ok.. well being that the HD is brand new.. but probably 2 years sitting on my shelf.. doubt it has anything to do with seagate .. anyways..

its a Maxtor 6y160m0 ive searched the maxtor site for jumper configs and what not and havent found anything yet.. any other ideas would be sweet.. I have the bios all set up right.. it does not show in disk management..

This is what I have found on the maxtor site regarding jumpers and SATA drives..

PLEASE NOTE: Unlike standard ATA drives, Serial ATA drives DO NOT require the use of jumpers to configure the drive. Please disregard any references to jumper settings and Master, Slave and Cable Select configurations in the Maxtor Installation Guide.

OK, let's see if I get this picture...

You've got two raptor 74 GB hd's that spin at 10k RPM in a raid array. (didn't mention 0 or 1, so I'll assume 0...)

Now you want to add a wd maxtor 160 GB 7.2 k RPM drive to the mix... ???

Why?

Most people will probably agree that its really really nice to have a backup drive just incase that raid-0 config fails out.. which they tend to do more than any other config..

Anyways.. 2 74gig raptors in a raid-0, adding a 160gig 7.2k RPM SATA drive should go in without a problem..

SATA Controllers are already installed.. bios and post recognize it... but nothing further than that.

Someone mentioned jumper settings.. I have searched maxtor and google.. it has 8 pins for jumpers cannot find any configs out there for it.. most sites are saying dont touch the jumpers at all should be jumper free configuration..

Sorry... Thought that your original post implied that you wanted to add this drive to your raid...

Having never had a WD drive, I'll just wait the outcome.

The drive im looking to add is the Maxtor 160 SATA 6Y160M0

Like most motherboards with on-board RAID capabilities, the NVidia RAID settings are all-or-nothing. In other words, if you have 2 WD Raptors in a RAID 0 on the NVidia SATA ports (blue), then all the NVidia SATA ports are in RAID mode. You can't use a plain jane SATA drive on them.

You have several choices, but one or more of these may not work, depending on what the RAID controllers allow:

1. Go into the NVidia RAID configuration and set up a second JBOD (spanning) array using the Maxtor 6Y160M0 as the only drive.

2. Connect the Maxtor drive to the Silicon Image 3132 controller (single black SATA connector over by the processor). You'll need to turn the SI3132 controller on in the BIOS and install drivers for it in Windows.

3. Get a 2nd 160GB drive, pair it with the Maxtor 6Y160M0, and create another RAID-0 or RAID-1 on the NVidia controller.

4. Get a cheap SATA PCI card and use that.

Are you sure? I know his mobo has a NF590 chipset, but my mobo has an NF4 ultra chipset. I'm running 4 HDD's all on the nvidia ports. SATA 1&2 are running raid 1, SATA 3 is in raid mode and configured as a hot spare. SATA 4 is configured non-raid. All 4 drives (WD2500KS) show up properly in device manager - under hard disks I see only 2 drives since 3 make up the RAID.

Speedfan confirms this as I can't get SMART info from any drives on the RAID (doesn't show up at all), but I can get SMART info on SATA 4 (the non raided drive).

Is this no longer supported with the NF590?

At startup, just after the POST screen, you should see the RAID controller initializing... during this initialization, it should say "Press the 'X' Key to enter SCSI/RAID setup"... in this setup, you will need to activate and add the new hard drive, by either creating it's own raid setup, or adding it to the current raid configuration. Adding the HD to the current raid configuration, may however, cause you to lose data.. I cant remember if the Asus MBs allow that or not.

It is conceivable that you could individually configure each port, but I read the manual for his motherboard and it showed only one setting for the NVidia RAID controller. That implies to me that the ports are all RAID or all non-RAID.

Yes, the manual section for the Silicon Image controller says "Configure a CONCATENATION set when using a single Serial ATA drive; otherwise, the system will not recognize the drive.

("CONCATENATION" = JBOD)
