Best/Worst deals on 8800GTS/GTX

* Current average price: GTS = $479.99; GTX = $639.99

Current best deal(s):
PNY has been consistently selling both the GTS and GTX at $450/$600. And quite a few sites are selling the PNYs at close to that.

I've been told that Dabs.co.uk has the best price on both cards in the UK: GTS = £320 and GTX = £400. Neither price looks good with a little conversion to US currency: $610/$760.  (thanks sprite) But at least it's not the worst price...

Current worst deal(s):
If you've actually been paying attention, AVADirect.com no longer has the most expensive GTX. It's gone down from $747.04. Now, if you've got a lot of money to spend, you could pick up an EVGA 8800GTX for $923.44 at EZ Systems!

Official 8800 site: http://www.nvidia.com/page/geforce8.html
Retailers: http://www.nvidia.com/content/wheretobuy/results.asp?CA...

Available manufacturers:
Asus, BFG, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, PNY, and XFX

-------------------------------------

NewEgg has all 14 skus, the GTS ranges from $450 to $480, the GTX ranges $620 to $660.

ZipZoomFly has 17 different skus (GTS/GTX) mostly at 480/630 pricing, except the extra three skus are $850 BFG's GTXs for water-cooled PC's w/ different pipe fitting sizes (and I thought $650 was bad :p  )

Too rich for your blood? TigerDirect also has the Water Cooler Edition BFGs at $800. Not that you actually care about $50 anyways since you'd already spent 16 of its brothers and sisters.

P.S. This is my first post on THG! How's my driving?

The XFX is $599 at Zipzoom. Not in stock though.
November 8, 2006 5:37:35 PM

Seeing the benchmarks on THG, I'm not paying that much for a few more frames. I'll just sit here and wait for more apps to utilize this. Hopefully, when Vista is released (January 30th, 2007), there will be more gfx cards with DX10, hence lowering some of the prices...HOPEFULLY!

Hey it is in stock now but was out just a fe minutes ago. The XFX is $50 cheaper than all the others at $599. I have to be honest, if the BFG or EVGA was $599 shipped, I think I'd go on impulse and buy one. It's easier to ask my wife for forgiveness than to try and get permission to spend $600 an a GPU. ;)
November 8, 2006 5:46:27 PM

Er, that's kind of gross. How about falling off the trees in your backyard instead? :p

Unbelieveable, two minutes later they raised the price to $649. :x

You know what. I just paid a huge credit card bill today, not to mention our property taxes. The checking account is in sad shape. That's the biggest reason I am able to resist that BFG right now.

The link listed it as 650 for me. Did you get a referal discount through another site or has it too changed?

Okay, never mind.
November 8, 2006 6:25:04 PM

Why would anyone pay these prices today?
November 8, 2006 6:28:13 PM

Because they have money burning through their pockets?

I still wouldn't buy one next month. When will dx10 games be out? I'm not gonna shell out $500 just for Crysis...I'm not even a fan of FPS games. Now if Oblivion came out in DX10 I might consider it...
November 8, 2006 6:34:15 PM

If ATI releases their new graphics card, probably can expect it to go down even more...

More importantly at least from newegg doesn't seem to be any price drops on teh 7900GT or below price range. :-/ So much for waiting, just the same ol rebates that have been there forever.

Was to be expected, all it did was knock off the 7950GX2 and the 7900GTX...
November 8, 2006 7:33:31 PM

I got an evga 7900 GTO a couple of weeks ago, so I will use the step-up program for the GTS. I'm hoping something happens soon to knock the prices down, but with no competion for months it's not likely to happen before my 90 days is up. :(
November 8, 2006 8:11:15 PM

Sorry, just got overly excited when I saw a Fry's ad in my paper with no information on pricing. I made it my mission to find out specifics. Then all the sites began updating and I went nuts. :D

i have been going nuts for a while about these cards,i must own one!!!!or 2.if i could id own xfire sli, intel quad and 4x4.

if i had the money id host a tweakvention and have some toms readers i like there tweaking pc's modding and such.maybe do some lan party crud, build some quads and 4x4's.build cases from scratch and mod others.

(vern looks at what he just wrote) i am not well

If I had the money I'd...join you. As for now, I'm saving up for a Wii, more Xbox 360 games, other people's Christmas presents, a car, and a Dell 2407 WFP flat panel. How could nVidia do this to me?

Edit: Woops, forgot PC games in that list...and Vista! :?
November 8, 2006 8:37:49 PM

Mr. Burns (fingers strumming): Excellent!
November 8, 2006 9:28:11 PM

Boy that was a hard read (went through about three times to get it...I hope), but I think it got the message across.

Thanks. :)
November 8, 2006 9:42:15 PM

Yeah, I got it all on the fifth try as the accent was now flowing in my head. 8)

I feel sorry for the janitor.

As someone else said, it'd probably be better to wait for a second gen. The way I see it, by then, they'll have had a longer time looking at the DirectX10 API and be able to better utilize it's functionality.
November 8, 2006 10:01:10 PM

It still amazes me that GPUs are using OpenGL 2.0... or has it gone up to 2.1?

What is up with OpenGL?! Why aren't there any new releases?! OpenGL is like cross platform (like Java)... hmmm
November 8, 2006 10:07:00 PM

Huh?! Correct me if I'm wrong, what does SM3.0 and SM4.0 have to do with OpenGL?! I thought those were part of DirectX. :?

That's what I'll be up against at the tail end of my 90 step-up period. Should I just jump on board the first gen 8800s to get $250 off and possibly kick myself when better cards come along w/ DX10 games and Vista to back them up, or should I wait for the 8900 to go down to current 7900 prices and pay the same amount for better hardware, but have to wait a year to do it?

Heck, I'd probably be happy with a 8500/8600 if it comes out in time.
November 8, 2006 10:12:46 PM

Yea, if it doesn't kill you, just stick with the 7900GTO.

When you upgrade to Vista and start buying DX10 games, then get a DX10 card. 8)
November 8, 2006 10:19:24 PM

:)  It won't kill me, but I'd like to have something powerful to play games on the 2407 WFP I plan I getting in January. 1920x1200 is probably going to be a strain on my GTO when the new games come out. Thank goodness I'm not playing Oblivion!
November 8, 2006 10:24:04 PM

Dang! NewEgg added PNY and Gigabyte to their list, but now all their GTX cards are listed at 660! :x
November 8, 2006 10:25:07 PM

Yea... I'm glad I'm done with my computer build :p
November 8, 2006 10:31:29 PM

Well my x1900xtx OEM fried, I got it for $331 now you can't get one for under $400 just got my refund yesterday. So I took the plunge on a 8800 GTX for $649 actually $666.80 with overnight shipping don't expect it until Friday though. Hell it has a life time warranty and should be able to cut my 3dmax render times considerably with the Nvidia plug-in.
November 8, 2006 10:36:56 PM

Heh. Let us know how it works out for you... that is, if you don't mind
November 8, 2006 10:40:54 PM

Thank goodness for refunds. I hope you have a back up until the GTX arrives.
November 8, 2006 10:58:33 PM

Umm lets just say I can post on the forum with my G-force 6200 which I got to run a duel monitor setup at the office until realized it PCIe x1 slot and wouldn't work. I just never bother to send it back. Wont really play games but at least it works.

NP guys, I'll give feedback once I upgrade the AC in my office...
November 8, 2006 10:59:36 PM

FYI...if you're ready to buy one...

PNY is selling GTX's on their site for the 599.99 suggested price instead of $660+

From what I've read all the cards are the same anyway, besides maybe the sticker on the cooler :p  Any reason not to go with PNY? I don't know their history.
November 9, 2006 1:10:25 AM

Dude, Dark Messiah is awesome! If you like Oblivion, you like Dark Messiah

November 9, 2006 1:56:03 AM

Well a few hours ago I ordered a EVGA 8800 GTX off newegg. $666.12 with shipping. Steep price but whatever I don't care haha I'm eager to get rid of this X850XT and get my entire new rig up and running.
November 9, 2006 5:54:34 PM

  I knew NewEgg would eventually have them for 666. They probably bumped up the price just so S&H would prove they're   .
November 9, 2006 8:00:29 PM

In the UK the cheapest 8800GTS is £320 and the cheapest GTX is £400. Both from Dabs.co.uk

OMG ! Just realised thats $608 for the GTS and $762 for the GTX ! AND THOSE ARE THE CHEAPEST IN THE UK !!!
November 9, 2006 8:18:05 PM

Yikes! 8O Still, you're probably used to getting shafted. At least you don't have to wait for release...if that actually helps ease the blow. :?
