Intels website states that the E6300 CPU is for the 965 chipset.

Asus states that this CPU runs also on there 945 chipset, ie. P5L-VM-1394 Mainboard.

Q: What has ASUS done to this MB that allows the E6300 to run on the 945 chipset?

Q: Would there be a performance loss on the 945 chipset compared to the 965?

Jack is right. The Core 2 Duo necessitated a change to the VRM. Currently that is at VRM 11. Intel now has a new 945 board (Coryville) with the VRM 11 on it and it supports the Core 2 Duo (Conroe) processors.

Effectively any board maker can update an older chipset board that can support a 1066 FSB and VRM 11 with a Bios that has the correct uCode and it should run a Conroe with no problems.

Unfortunately Intel does not validate those combinations so any incompatibilities that might show up Intel will not look at and the motherboard vendor must support/fix themselves.

I'm running my E6600 on an Gigabyte 945 based board - my E6400 is running ona $45 ECS P4M800 based board. Both are running strong. So from a technical standpoint what was said above is good, from a practical in use standpoint, I'm doing well. Mayhap not the hightest performing board to pair with this proc, but it's damn fast enough for me (for now) :D

Maybe some day, I will have a surprise like that....!!!

Also I would like to add that the intel 865g/p chipset can support C2D, an example is ASRock http://www.asrock.com/product/775i65G.htm
it's a great bord for who is looking to keep it's older components for 44.95$ @ newegg http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16813157091

and just invisting in a C2D E6300 for 183.5$ http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16819115005

Cheers Sam
