Best multi core performer

Hey guys, I have a dual core machine but I wanted to get me a quad, could you guys make a few suggestions on whether I should use Vista, 7 or just XP for max efficiency with the 4/8 cores (if I get an i7).

And would you guys happen to know if we can game on a virtual machine, with a linux distrib as host os (I mean high req games, like Lost Planet, not the likes of WoW)
