So I am finally upgrading from my socket 478 3GHz P4 and I am going to get the Evga 680i SLI. I planed to get the E6700 with it but after reading a couple reviews it is sounding like the E6600 and E6700 are not accepting high FSB like the other 3 conroe models. The most compelling review I read had the E6700 maxed out at 1500mhz on the 680i while the X6800 went to 2025MHz:

I am beginning to feel like the E6700 would be a waste of money and maybe I should either go for the E6600 or just go crazy and get the X6800 (way to expensive and i probably wont do it).

What do you guys think? Do you know any more about any FSB issues with the E6600 and the E6700? Please point me to any other tests or reviews if you know them off hand.

Also, im willing to spend up to $400 on memory. The Corsair Dominator PC-8500 5-5-5-15 seems reasonable. Is this good or can I do better for my money?

Much appreciated.

The 4MB cache Conroes are a bit tougher to OC, thats true, but they make up for it with their high multipliers. The E6700 comes from the same binning as the X6800, so youll get roughly the same quality and potential.
I believe the eVGA board is just a glimpse of what other, better engenniered, will be able to do. Asus Striker and DFI RD600 being the perfect example.
Any 800CL4 can do the timings and speeds of those Corsair modules.

If you are waiting a week or 2, take a look at prices on the Dominator PC8888 if you are interested in the best memory available for your MOBO. Fugger over at Extreme Systems has gotten both the Dominator PC8888 and the new PC9136 to boot at 2,2,2,2, timings which is unheard of for DDR2. There is a lot of memory out there for less to be sure but, if you want memory guaranteed to run it's rated speed or better, there is no better option for your MOBO than the Dominator line.

In bios there is quite a few timing settings and I was very surprised that this memory will do very tight timing of 2-2-2-2 timing at stock 266FSB speed in sync mode DDR speed of 533Mhz. I had no problems running 3-2-2-x, 3-3-2-x, 3-2-3-x as well. This memory was very flexable compared to other DDR2 I have tested. The motherboard booted!!

Thanks guys. I have decided to save some money and go with the OCZ Platinum Rev2 6400 sticks. I have read 4 reviews on the EVGA 680i and I am happy with what I have read. 3 were totally happy with it. 1 said it was on par with the 975.

Hehe it 'boots' at 2-2-2-2, nice. Ill be getting the same chips Corsair uses so I just might be able to run some 3-4-4-xx timings on my 24/7 OC.
