Hey guys, i'm a first time overclocker (going to be soon) and i've ordered the following:

1) E6400
2) MB GIGABYTE GA-965P-DS3
3) G.SKILL 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800

Using From old system:
1) SB Audigy
2) WD Cavear SE HDD
3) 7800 GTX

I'm aiming to OC it up to 400 x 8 = 3.2 Ghz (Atleast over the 3 Ghz mark and but prefer to run 1:1).
I have heard varying information about the Stock cooler performing brilliantly upto 3+ghz. Am i going to need ellaborate cooling? If so, liquid or air? Please suggest brand names etc.. heard about this sythe cooler??
(Prefer to keep the cooling budget for under 50$ if possible)

Thanks.

I have the same MoBo and 6400. Using an Artic Freezer Pro from Newegg under $30.

Currently at 420 x 8 = 3360
1.4v
39-44C under full load
running 24/7

It must be better than I thought if it is keeping a 805 at 3.8 cool 8O

thanks tool_462, after i posted i looked around and saw that this freezer 7 pro thing keeps getting recommended. guess ill be getting that then. Any ideas how high i'll be able to go with that configuration? is 450 x 8 = 3.6 Ghz wishful thinking?

I can see where 3.6 may be pushing it a little, if you have good air flow I think the temps should be pretty good. 3.3-3.4 seems more the norm, which is still a badass processor! But looking again, I see virtualhideout has a E6400 running stable with a Zalman CNPS9500 cooler (similar cooling capacity) but that is on an open test bed and they said they wouldn't want to run 24/7 @ 3.6 unless they put a water kit on it.

I am pretty sure the G. Skill ram will run at 900mhz (450 FSB) probably at stock voltage and settings too.

It is a great cooler, I can hit 4.0Ghz stable on the D805 with it, but I like to keep the voltage one notch down and it isnt stable at 4.0.

Edit: I have to remember to take some idle/full load temp screenshots, when and if I remember, I will post em.
