Hello,

Does anyone have any ideas on what an event error in XP
means that says: harddisk O\D has a bad block (?). Any
advice would be greatly appreciated.

If you double click on that event error it will bring up the
Event Properites page on which you should see a link below where
it says "For more information...". Click on that link to see what
Microsoft has to say about that error. That may give you some
insight into what the problem could be.

My advice is to backup all your important files ASAP because you
have a problem with your hard drive.

Try this: Start -> Run -> cmd.exe. Then enter chkdsk D: /f
(spaces before and after D:). If D is your system partition,
you'll be asked about running chkdsk the next time your system
starts. Enter y and restart your computer. When it finishes you
should see a line in the report for "KB in bad sectors". If this
value is something other than 0 it means that a portion of your
hard drive is damaged. Windows has now marked that block and will
not use it.

You might want to find out the manufacturer and model of your
hard drive. You can find that out through Device Manager. Go to
the manufacturer's support web site and see if you can download a
hard drive diagnostic utility. Put it on a floppy and see what
results it gives.

Bottom line is that there's no way of saying when or even if your
hard drive will fail. It could run without problems for a long
time or fail tomorrow. If you need your machine to be available
all the time, then you might want to plan on replacing the HD
right away. If you can afford to have it down for some time then
you might just keep making backups on a regular basis and cross
your fingers.
