ram is pricey be it ddr or ddr2.
so an amd s939 might be the way to go. it is being phased out.
but you wont have to buy new ram.

c2d and am2 both use ddr2. and 2 gigs of ddr2 will cost around 200$ alone.

the video card upgrade will make the biggest difference.

And now the FX-62 is showing throttling even at the highest resolutions up to 1600x1200 with or without FSAA and Aniso-filtering on.

man you have to say that

now im bummed out :)

of course i have the x2 4400 oc,ed to 2.6 which is close to fx60 speeds.
that makes me happy but still bummed

Maybe you should actually look at the numbers before you have a cow. The 2.8FX provides less the 50 fps in only a few occasions - like Oblivion with the EYE candy or 2048x1536 resolution. The average look sto be around 85 fpsfor all resolutions AND all cards.

Yes the Core 2 WILL get some more frames, but nowadays, the Extreme Tech type comparisons are the way to go.
In their shootout between 6600 and 5000+ it shows that the experience is the key once you start seeing 100 fps.

If budget is the key there are a few low priced PCIe cards and 939 boards less than $100 with SLI Check out Newegg.
The X1600 or 7600GT is under $150 in some cases, while the 4000+ is under $200.

That looks to beabout $450 and let's you keep your RAM. There are 1 or 2 939 boards left with AGP, but it sounds like you need a GPU.

Actually the game Battlefield 2 has shown that it is more CPU dependant now days that GPU, as faster and better CPU'S(C2D) appear, performance goes up dramaticly.

Yep, depending on the game, there are a few even today with a 7900 or 1900 card that will show a throttle at 1280x1024.

I find it kinda amuzing that a small group, HardOCP in particular, will complain that all the C2D benchmarks were not realworld thus C2D was not as cracked up as it was thought to be. Interestingly they defined realworld as 1600x1200 16x AA and 8X FSAA, benched using a 7800GT and showed all processors getting the FPS... hmmmm. Of course, they rigged their bench to throttle at the GPU....

Now we have a GPU that shows even at 1600x1200, games will throttle at an FX-62.... where is their argument now?? :)I guess, maybe, they have to swallow their pride.....[H]ard. :p

for c2d & ddr, you can run it with asrock 775dual-vsta motherboard (vary from US $55 to $65).

i'm using c2d and ddr400 for almost 3 months. so far so good.

here's the link:

i found i still could play need for speed carbon with 50-60 fps average on 1024x768 resolution all set to maximum video setting by running a c2d, asrock 775dual-vsta, 2gb ddr400, and a x1900xt pcie vga card.
