Just look at the temps, as long as they dont pass around 60 degrees you should be Ok. You should be able to hit 3Ghz easy with stock cooling although it will definately limit you from reaching higher FSBs afterwards

You can overclock most any cpu with any cooler but make sure you watch the temps. You should be able to set shutdown specs in your bios to prevent overheating the CPU. Set the MoBo to throtle back or shut down the system and be conservative of the temps. I set max temps on my systems to around 125-130 degrees F. Altho I understand that 140 or even 150 can be survived.

I OC'd the e6600 on a asus p5b-delux to 3000 mhz on stock cooling with no problems. It ran at around 48Cat idle to around 55mhz at load. I couldnt reach 3200 with the stock fan stable, altho I heard it was done. For comparison, I have sine upgraded to a Tuniq Tower 120 hsf and got same temperatures at 3600 mhz. So yea its very possible to OC, as yas said you will be limited.
