No first hand, but I think you have to remove it, comming from THG review today actually.

I have this mobo and it will have problems with most 3rd party HSFs. I use the Zalman CNPS9500LED and I just whacked a couple of brass nipples underneath the mounting holes on the mobo (ie: I screwed them into the mobo tray) and screwed the mounting bracket directly into those nipples. It's probably sturdier than the normal way of doing things anyways :). You could do the same, or otherwise you'll have to remove that backing.

althaz,
I am not sure I understand exactly how you mounted the HSF. Did you drill and tap to mount to the tray?
I presently have a big typhoon using bolts with fiber washers through the mobo holes, not using the bracket at all. It works fine though I have always been a bit leery of the strength of this mounting and possible stresses to the board.
Would you explain in a bit more detail how you accomplished your installation?
Thanks
